Best war movie I have seen in a long, long time. Based on a true story it stays close to the original and does not disappoint. Mel Gibson is an excellent director. Starts off with flamethrowing soldiers on fire. Kicks back to two kids duking it out. Shows a young man saving another young man's life. Then the young man courts a nurse in an amusing way and as a conscientious objector ends up enlisting in the army anyway. He gets into all kinds of trouble when he will not even touch a rifle. There is controversy and anxiety but the man finally becomes a medic. And then....and then... he will not leave the wounded behind and there is gunfire and bombings and flamethrowing and all kinds of Japanese doing their thing and it is just wild and exciting. Watch the movie. It is great stuff.
