I picked this one up as it advertises it's good for beginners, but also has lots of neat features. I set up a hunt for her by burying a couple coins in our backyard sandbox. Assembly was easy, It comes with the required 9v batteries. We had to read the manual to figure out what all the settings were but it's simple enough once you go through them once.
Without issue she was able to sweep over the sand, the detector beeped and she dug down eventually finding all the coins. She's ecstatic and can't wait to try it out further next time we are at the beach.
My daughter and I were recently on a beach and she watched a boy walk by with a metal detector. It went off and he dug down and found some toy cars. My daughter was absolutely floored and thought it was the coolest thing ever.
