We saw Grasshopper Pie and Other Poems at the book fair at my daughter's school. She didn't want to get it at first because of the cover illustration, but I decided to give it a try anyway. She fell in love with Grasshopper Pie the first time I read it to her and read it to herself as soon as I finished. That's quite a big deal, because my seven year old is dyslexic. She has to really love a book to want to read it herself, and she really loved this one! Still I have to agree with her about the illustrations. They are way too literal and realistic -- detracting from the humor instead of adding to it. I hope David Steinberg's career as a poet for children takes off, and I hope next time he gets a more appropriate illustrator. If only he could illustrate his poems himself, he really could be the next Shel Silverstein.
