Told in alternate time periods, the present day and the late 1790's, "The Lost Apothecary" tells the story of Caroline, an Ohio woman in her mid-30's who is visiting London on what was supposed to be a 10th anniversary trip with her husband, but due to his recent admission of infidelity she alone is in London. Participating in a "mudlarking" excursion, Caroline finds an old apothecary jar with the engraving of a bear.

Curious to find out more about the jar, she enlists the help of Gaynor, the daughter of the leader of the mudlarking excursion and a library employee. Gaynor and Caroline do research learn a lot about the mystery of the jar. Caroline's research eventually leads her to an awakening about her own future.

In 1791 12 year old Eliza Fanning goes into service as a house servant in London. She befriends the owner of the apothecary when she is sent there by her employer, and subsequently Eliza learns about the activities of the owner of the shop.

An interesting read.
