Customer Review

I bought this book for my son, who is mixed race (South Asian and African-American). I am disappointed, and will be returning it because it presents highly stereotyped characters like "Mr Kashmir" who runs the local spice shop and "Mr Pellegrino" who runs the local pizzeria -because apparently Italians must make pasta or pizza for a living? And Indians if they don't drive cabs, run spice shops I suppose? Part of celebrating diversity is to challenge our limited perceptions of each other, and to let our children know that anything is possible. Instead, this book subtly reinforces stereotypes around colour and ethnicity. Thumbs down.
