I thought the extra 3 discs per movie was a little much at first, but I've just lately started watching them and they are very interesting. The "Behind the Scenes" for each is a little dry, but The Appendices 1-6 are very insightful: showing Tolken's past and how he came to writing the books, the actors talking to the camera telling us their personal stories, and the making of the movies themselves.

If you're thinking of buying the regular versions don't even bother. If you want to own The Lord of the Rings you should get the extended editions. It also comes with codes for iTunes so you can have each movie on your computer as well.
