Quite honestly, I learned more about the United States government in this book than I did in my senior year government class. Each chapter is clearly defined and explored in depth. While it might be aimed at a slightly younger audience, I have no doubt that many (if not most) adults could gain a lot from giving this book a solid read. Part of what makes You Call This Democracy? so successful is that Rusch very explicitly makes the discussion of democracy in our country (and how we’ve let it down) go beyond party lines. And she’s right to do so, because democracy should be something everyone, regardless of political leanings, is invested in. It also acknowledges and works with the fact that a lot of kids and teens are interested in politics, but might not know where to start. Rusch breaks down every issue discussed, from voting age to gerrymandering to dark money, in a way that younger readers will understand without talking down to them. And while it can be disheartening at times, each chapter has suggestions for direct action that readers can take to change things. Honestly, this should be required reading. Just saying.
