You have enough to read – I get that. This book is designed to be an enjoyable, perhaps 2-hour, read that will share enough guiding information to, if applied, save you literally hundreds of hours and limitless frustration. Some of the tips recommended can also prevent you from near mental breakdown, losing your job and/or even losing an important relationship. Trust me – I experienced all the above.

Before I began my doctorate adventure years ago, I called upon mentors and others who had successfully endured their ‘rites of passage’ and earned their masters and doctorates. Those mentors who provided guidance and insight paved it forward for me and I can only hope to do the same for you by writing this book. I have consolidated the most important ‘Top 10’ tips that I, and others, feel are most important for anyone aspiring, and currently enduring, to earn their graduate degree.

You will work harder than you ever have in your life. You will be more challenged than you can imagine. Many times, you will want to give up. Expect those feelings … anticipate the frustration … foresee those moments where you are discouraged with the world. BUT DO NOT QUIT. The reason YOU will be successful and earn your masters/doctorate is because YOU will not give up. You will not quit. You will be successful because you are resilient. You will successfully earn your masters/doctorate because you will apply the tips and knowledge from this book.

You are NOT an imposter. You will earn a graduate degree and you deserve it. If you are the first in your family to embark on this journey, then congratulations! You are also a pioneer and are leaving an educational legacy!

Yes, life might get in the way. In fact, it likely will. As long as you have the support from others and a positive, developmental relationship with your faculty and advisor, you can work through those tough moments and persist through adversity.

The vision of you walking across that stage and earning your graduate degree in front of thousands needs to be a daily reminder. Moreover, the reality that you will be earning a higher-level education should be a daily motivator. The career advancement opportunities you will receive because you shattered through the glass ceiling must be an anchor for why you should persist. You’ll look back and be glad you did.

If earning a masters or doctorate was easy, everyone would be doing it. That’s why most don’t. I was one of 2 people out of my doctorate cohort who successfully finished. We had 22 aspiring students in my first class.

Lastly, there is no panacea tip for completing your thesis/dissertation. All the tips listed in this book are equally important. I did think about ranking them, but I did not want to over/underestimate the importance of any one particular tip --- these tips are not arranged in rank order importance; rather they are equally equitable. And depending on your situation, certain tips may have more relevance than others. But trust me, each tip has been vetted and examined. It’s in this book for a reason.
