Kathryn Hughes was born in Altrincham, near Manchester. After completing a secretarial course, Kathryn met her husband and they married in Canada. For twenty-nine years they ran a business together, raised two children and travelled when they could to places such as India, Singapore, South Africa and New Zealand. Kathryn and her family now make their home in a village near Manchester. I was looking for a book with a lighter vibe after a period of reading intense crime novels. I came across The Letter on Amazon and thought I'd give it a whirl. I'm so glad I did.

This is both a heart warming novel and one tinged with sadness too. It's incredibly easy to read and just be pulled along into the story, losing track of time. If you are looking for some fiction escapism this will do the job nicely.

The book moves between two timelines. In modern day, an old letter, never posted is discovered in an old coat left for a charity shop to sell. The letter, once read sparks a curiosity and a journey to find out more about the story with it and to return it to its intended recipient.

Then we are on the brink of WWII in England and the true story behind this letter and how it came to be unravels. The author flits us between today and yesteryear seamlessly, it left me wanting to know what was next with both scenarios.

Tackling issues like domestic violence, there are some heart breaking moments in the novel, there are plenty of wonderful ones too. It is a book that left me feeling satisfied and all warm and fuzzy inside after reading it.

It's paced really well, I read it quite quickly and the plot held my interest all the way. If you are looking for a "nice" read then don't look past this book, I really enjoyed it and the change of pace in my reading it gave me.

I read the Kindle version of this book. All review opinions are my own and totally unbiased.

I found this somewhat disappointing. The idea of the plot is good. A letter left in a coat pocket, found at a charity shop provides the link between the present and the past. A search is begun to trace the author of the letter, and at the end everything is tied up with a bow in a way that could only happen in fiction.
I found the writing style at times formulaic and predictable and would not rush to read anything else by this author.

The story is told in two time scales, by two women, Chrissie at the beginning of world war 1 and Tina in 1974 - When Tina finds an unopened envelope in the pocket of an old suit jacket that arrives in the charity shop where she volunteers on Saturdays, little does she realise that by opening it and reading the letter inside that her life and the life of Chrissie, will change irrevocably. But will their lives change for better or worse?

I found this a light read, which really it shouldn’t have been, because the subject matters it covers are highly sensitive and deserved a bit more depth in my opinion. I found the characters very under developed and they didn’t leave me wanting to know what happened to them after the book ended. The story line had so much potential and could have been a really great read, but I found far too many convenient coincidences, which is a bit of a cop out for the author. In saying all that, I did want to finish the book to see what happened, hence my three star rating and not the two I would have given otherwise.

Loved this story !! It was soooooooo nice and kept me totally gripped although I was sobbing in places as well. The one I have has a beautiful cover too with the snowdrops.
There were some lovely little observations in it.....I loved the one about the bumble bee. Then at times I was almost holding my breath with anticipation as, because it was set in 1939 and 1973 we knew a lot of what occurred in those years in advance of what was happening in the story. It took me back to a time of proper respect and proper families, things we don't see so much these days. Sad too how so many babies died so young of things that would be curable these days on the other hand- and of course so many young men killed in wars, so it's swings 'n' roundabouts, I guess.
I liked all the characters, the 2 girls mainly featured especially. It was so interesting how one letter changed the course of so many lives. I found it intriguing too that in "olden times" girls could be sent overseas to Ireland to have a child out of wedlock whereas these days they're making the opposite journey....I remember too the powercuts in the early 70s and rushing round to get candles lit. It was quite the adventure !!
It wasn't without the odd error-thanks to good old e-book production.....speechmarks were dropped and so were the odd words like I/you and then peek was written as peak (!!) However, that was it and I am really impressed and look forwarding to reading more by her.
