The Power of TED* (*The Empowerment Dynamic) is a fable on self-leadership, because how you lead your own life has everything to do with how you lead in other areas. It is a tool for both individuals and organizations who want to create more effective communication and relationships. Learning how to transform everyday drama and opt for more growth-oriented solutions, is the priceless gift it teaches.
As you walk with David, the main character, he shares how he is feeling victimized by life. Through serendipity he meets some wise guides, Ted and Sophia, who show David how he can move from feeling like a Victim to being a Creator of his own life.
The Power of TED* offers a powerful alternative to the Karpman Drama Triangle with its roles of Victim, Persecutor, and Rescuer. The Empowerment Dynamic (TED) provides the antidote roles of Creator, Challenger and Coach and a more positive approach to life s challenges.
The teaching story provides a guide for learning and growing through the challenges we all face in our lives. Its message resonates with everyone who, at some time in their lives, feel victimized by their situation.
Having helped thousands of people and scores of organizations over the past decade, The Power of TED* (*The Empowerment Dynamic) is being published in this 10th Anniversary Edition to convey a very timely message of hope that all of life, whether at home or work, can be transformed to create satisfying and fulfilling relationships.
Its message is needed now more than ever.
The 10th Anniversary Edition retains the powerful leadership story and adds three new sections:
1. A new Foreword by Lisa Lahey, Ed D, Harvard Graduate School of Education
2. New Study Questions for the Journey
3. A new Preface by the Author
...really smart and helpful information about...stronger, saner, and healthier ways of behaving. Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love
The Power of TED* is an engaging story that will help you escape from the traps of victimhood and enablement! Stephen M. R. Covey, author of The Speed of Trust and co-founder of FranklinCovey s Trust Practice
Victimhood has become, in our time, a badge, an identity, a game, an excuse for laziness, frivolous law suits, and clever domination of others. I have always taught that Jesus did the victim thing right: He neither played the victim nor created victims of others. I think David Emerald is teaching our world the same wisdom in his Empowerment Dynamic. Fr. Richard Rohr, O.F.M., author of Immortal Diamond: The Search for Our True Self
It s no exaggeration to say that our world would be a better place if everyone read it. Lisa Lahey, Harvard Graduate School of Education; co-author, Immunity to Change, and An Everyone Culture
The Empowerment Triangle is a highly original and effective escape from the Drama Triangle. Stephen Karpman, M.D., originator of the Karpman Drama Triangle
When practical advice meets profound, yet simple, explanations for human behavior, we can learn, change, and grow. Annie McKee; co-author Becoming a Resonant Leader, Resonant Leadership, and Primal Leadership
Reading TED* is like having a private session with a gifted spiritual teacher and coach: as you make this delightful journey, you awaken to powerful new possibilities. Jennifer Louden, author of Comfort Secrets of Busy Women and the Comfort Book series
This powerful little book points the way toward a hugely fulfilling life of empowering relationships at work, at home, in the whole of your life. Gay Hendricks, Ph.D. and Kathlyn Hendricks, Ph.D., authors of Conscious Loving

The charming didactical narrative finds David nursing his emotional wounds at the seashore and chancing upon a series of meetings, firstly, with the mysterious figure Ted, then his former pupil, Sophia, who both hold a pearl of greater wisdom that: “life is a learning lab where you are constantly experimenting with higher knowing, increasing capacity to design life and choose responses.” In a way, the style of writing resembles the poignancy of the fable Jonathan Livingston Seagull, a memorable homily about a journey of awakening; and in a similar vein, Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist; though for me, it doesn’t quite reach the mastery of these authors in skillfully interweaving instruction and literary flair.
At the core of the TED way is a form of radical empiricism “to see reality for what it is and act accordingly” in subscribing to AIR: placing Attention on what you want (envisioned outcome) with your Intention to bring into being your manifestation, and producing ‘baby steps’ to obtain sustainable Results. All this while harnessing the dynamic tension inherent in the process of creation (cf. Festinger’s theory of cognitive dissonance) between one’s vision and the present situation, which can only be “resolved in either direction: letting go of one’s vision and snapping back toward the current situation, or moving from the current situation toward one’s vision.” A rubber band is stretched and released between David’s hands to illustrate the point. As a well-known practice in Agile project management and the stock-in-trade of many a motivational coach AIR is likely to be familiar to many with a keen interest in personal growth. Indeed, Nicholas Boothman (2003) might even sum it up better in ‘How to Succeed in Business in 90 Secs or Less’ using his acronym, KFC: “Know what you want; Find out what you are doing, and Change what you do until you get what you want.“
Which leads to an inescapable conclusion. The book is certainly “highly original” as the creator of the DDT concept himself endorses on the rear cover; however, I would suggest the scaffolding propping it up is not so. I, therefore, suspect seasoned ‘self-helpers’ are likely to have gleaned the same information in many guises elsewhere, for example, cognitive disciplines of psychology. However, that said, as a vehicle to introduce TED as a unique formulation in one hundred-odd page rather than in one chapter, the presentation is alluring, indeed beguiling; and what’s more, could easily be read in a couple of sittings making the book eminently accessible. I would further hazard a guess The Power of TED would make a great self-development crossover text for those on business management training, which is no mean feat. I cannot think of Karpman without his twin angelic sister ever again!

However...
The book itself is small with easy to read print - both positive points. My only disappointment is that upon reading, pages started coming out. It’s like they are not all secured properly into the spine. This is a real pity as already, quite a number have been shed. It completely spoils it for re-reading. I would have returned it for another copy but unfortunately, I underline and write on the pages (being dyslexic, it’s helpful!) so I cannot return. Such a pity. I suggest checking for this before highlighting!!

Despite the writing style, this book makes you change perspective and gives you step by step, practical guidance to 1. Understanding the victim orientation, 2. Self awareness, 3. Alternative ways of looking at things, 4. Specific practical ways to become the creator of your life
I come back to this book frequently, when I find myself caught in a loop of stress or “poor me!” And this book helps me get back on track.
Despite the dull and long-winded narrative, I can’t give it any less than 5 stars because of the idea behind it and how great this principle is.
