Andy works as a background writer for Games Workshop, crafting the worlds of Warhammer Age of Sigmar and Warhammer 40,000. Warhammer 40K as a video game packaged into paperback form.

Andy Clark writes a Warhammer 40K yarn like a video game more than other authors I have read but that's not necessarily a grave knock on his novel. He's amazingly economical with his action scenes and he packs them in end to end. The latter 2/3 of Shroud of Night describes a massive planetary invasion and Clark indulges in a little bit of everything: daemons, cultists, berserkers, angels and of course plenty of Space Marines. The entire cast is as one-note as you would expect from something like this and there's not much in the way of levity to balance out the grimdark. But again, would you have it any other way? A perfectly brisk vacation read or one to cozy up to in winter when Netflix just isn't doing it for you.

Very good read about the last few surviving members of an Alpha legion warband, who must carry out an infiltration mission for an Emperor’s Children warlord. The only problem is that this world is already under attack by hordes of Khorne berserkers, which complicates matters somewhat. The book gives a good insight into how the Alpha Legion operates and their leader’s struggle to keep his warband true to his Primarch’s legacy and avoid the corruption of Chaos as best he can. The second novel set in the current 40k timeline. After the events of Gathering Storm and the return of Guilliman. Shroud of Night focuses on a squad of Alpha Legion marines cut off from the rest of the galaxy and stranded on a world that's basically a giant fighting pit. Found and recovered they tasked by a Chaos Lord to deliver a package to the surface of an imperial held world besieged by three chaos armies, the Harrow must complete the mission to earn their freedom. That's the simple non spoilery version of the story at least. Shroud of Night is a brutal, well paced 40k novel with intriguing characters whose only loyalty to each other, or themselves, not the Gods or the Imperium. Its setting and fight scenes are brilliant, pulling no punches with violence or showing off the skill these warriors possess. Worth a read.

I wasn't sure about this book at first. The first 25% was very exposition heavy and although it got better as the story developed it carried on throughout to a greater or lesser degree. However this should not put you off reading this as its a really good story and really adds to the sense that all is really not well in the dark side of the Imperium.
