An emotional journey

Rules of the Road is a story of two lifelong friends who set out on a journey, a journey that one friend had planned to take alone. What she did not plan on, was what lengths a best friend will take to be by your side, no matter what.

Iris wants to go on a one-way trip as she is suffering with MS and thinks it is better that she tells no one what she is planning to do. When her best friend Terry finds out, she makes it her mission to go with Iris at all costs along with her father who is suffering from Alzheimer’s who happens to be with her at the time.

This journey takes them through different adventures, meeting new people and discovering what friendship is truly about. Saying any more would give away the ending of the book!

Ciara Geraghty’s writing style wraps the reader right into the story and the characters. It was beautifully written, and I loved that this story touched on so many emotions. It is a story you won’t soon forget. I rated it 4 stars only because of topic of the book. For me it was a little hard to deal with until the characters started evolving. Thank you so much to the author Ciara Geraghty, Harlequin and NetGalley for an advanced copy of the book to review. All opinions expressed for this review are unbiased and entirely my own.

Rules of the Road by Ciara Geraghty tells of a special friendship between two Irish women. After Terry picks up her father, who suffers from dementia, she drops in to her friend Iris’ home, only to find she has disappeared. She tracks her down and finds that Iris was on her way out of the country, without telling anyone. Concerned for her friend, Terry and her father spontaneously accompany Iris on her road trip (she fears flying). This will be a trip that will change the lives of these two women. This is touching and emotional friendship fiction. The author has created two beautiful and fascinating characters, complete with qualities and faults. The six-day road trip was not long enough and I would have spent many more days with Terry and Iris. Highly recommended. Thank you to Park Row for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This story is an unexpected, bittersweet journey of self-discovery. A tale about true friendship and going that extra mile for someone.

This is a beautifully crafted book written with empathy, compassion and sensitivity and a lot of insight focusing around MS and Dementia as a central theme and also focusing on the importance of families, friends and carers and how people cope with different situations. But most importantly it's about friendship.

Terry wants to surprise her friend Iris with a cake for her 58th birthday at the Yoga retreat she was treating herself to, and while she has found herself unexpectedly, left in charge of her elderly father who is a Dementia sufferer, she discovers Iris is missing. After some investigation Terry discovers what Iris is up to and is frantic to get to her friend, and so with her father in tow she finds Iris and the three of them embark on a totally unplanned road trip from Dublin over to Europe which brings them, fun, laughter, and tears and all the while Terry is trying to change her friends mind about her plan and bring her back home to Dublin.

The characters are wonderful in this story and so very real and you fall in love with them very quickly, I found myself relating to Terry in particular as she was slowly learning lots of things about herself she didn't realise, but I was rooting for all of them right to the last page. The rest of the supporting characters are fabulous, I was particularly fascinated with Vera.

The humour in this book was evident almost immediately and was cleverly interspersed using dialogue or with a lot Terry's thoughts. It is a really funny book that kept me hooked from page one, I laughed and cried with them all the way. There is an underlying difficult subject in the book but the author makes it easier to read about than you would expect it to be. I think Ciara has tremendous insight not just around the the sensitive subjects this book is about but also every thing that goes on around us day to day and what people say and the whole book is peppered with examples.

I really enjoyed reading Rules of the Road and I highly recommend it. I have been waiting for a while for one of those books that you just fall for the characters and for me, this is it. Thank you Ciara Geraghty

This was such a beautiful read which manages to be both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.

Firstly this book has a lovely flow to it which just draws the reader into the story and you soon get swept away with the brilliant story. It’s an incredibly thought provoking read as the main character, Iris has MS and through her I learnt a lot about the condition. It was incredibly poignant to read about the impact the disease has not just on the sufferer but also on their family.

I so loved this book and found it hard to put the book down as I was so absorbed in the story. It’s a story of discovery and adventure which takes the reader through every emotion possible. I found myself crying and laughing along with the characters as they go on their journey. There are a few twists and turns along the way but the beauty of the story is definitely the wonderful characters and the emotional story who will stay with me for a long time.

An absolutely beautifully written story which focuses around the very cruel and devastating illnesses of dementia and MS but also focuses on the unity between family and friends and how they all pull together to help each other. An incredible but emotional read which I thoroughly enjoyed. The characters are given so much depth – I loved the relationship between Terry and Eugene and I loved how despite being taken out of his normal routine and comfort zone, he coped with everything that was thrown at him. I highly recommend this book, and give it five stars.
