Classic Fantasy with modern ideas

If Ward excels at one thing, it is at creating characters and scenarios in which you do not know which side to root for. His characters are well written, and get put through the wringer in this one. We now have two main sides to the conflict, with the Hadari Emperor looking to invade the Tressians to the north. The twist in this novel is that the gods of this world get fully involved, and choose sides in the conflict. They fight alongside the troops, scheme and manipulate against each other, and are terrors on the battlefield. Seeing the gods enter the fray was unbelievably exciting and led to many page turning moments.

While these epic battles are occurring, there is scheming and politicking occurring in the capital. The parliament of crows are aiming to enhance their power in the region, and take the steps involved to do so. Their storyline with Malachi provided thrilling battle sequences, and moments of horror and dread. The crow market and their members are absolute stand outs in this series, and I throughly enjoy them anytime they appear on the page.

Legacy of Steel took all of the best qualities of Ash, and dialled it all up. If you’re looking for a classic fantasy story involving gods, political scheming, epic battles, and great characters, then Ward’s Legacy series is for you!

It's not a bad book but... in trying to summarise it it feels as if the story is happening to the characters, rather than the characters being part of the story.

The overuse of simile and metaphor is exhausting. I found myself skipping the first paragraph of each chapter as not only is it waffle, it's often contradictory. For example, 'motionless ink black water some thing something reflection of purity...' and you think.. if it's ink black, how did you know it was water? How could you see your reflection in it? It adds nothing and loses a lot.

There's also huge gaps, as if the writer didn't want to explain the why. The trilogy starts out OK, but then there's a huge wrench as it's all abandoned to push the story - I can't say plot - along. For example, there's repeated reference to a Trelan.. but.. I knew her for a chapter, with no reference as to what she did, where she came from or why she's relevant so we keep getting references to this hero figure that don't land.

Not a bad book, just one that feels lost, with more words than the plot can support and as this started with the author pushing the characters around rather than their being in a story.

Writing style and narrative flow both very substandard. Tried to follow on after really forcing myself through the first in the series but it's just really quite dull. Some of the writing is a bit like a child getting their hands on a thesaurus for the first time and the entire story is verbose to the point of eye rolling tedium.
