Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962 and celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Berenstain Bears during 2012! Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Though Stan died in 2005 and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from his studio in Pennsylvania.

I love most Berenstain Bears books. I wasn’t too happy with this one. A couple of things to point out. If you’re getting it because you know these books aren’t shy to discuss Christian views, you may be disappointed that there is only one page that actually discusses St. Patrick and it’s not done well. No mention of the shamrock representing the trinity of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Besides that, the vocabulary is insane! Why so many tough words for a children’s story? Why? I’m all for learning new words, but how about stick to maybe 2 or 3 good interesting challenging words? Instead of multiple words on every page to the point of losing track of the story to explain each word. I’m a teacher. I know the value of interesting new words in books, it just wasn’t done well at all. You want interesting words presented in an age appropriate way? Get some Fancy Nancy books. They’re awesome. Back to this book, story was discombobulated, difficult words did not contribute to the story, and using “we’re Bearish” instead of Irish and “Bearland” instead of Ireland sounds cute maybe to an adult, but it’s confusing to a child who is just learning about St. Patrick’s Day. They don’t make that connection. Unless they’re already accustomed to the words Irish and Ireland. Then they may get that cute play on words. All was lost on my five year old. We read it once and we are done. It’s going in the donation pile.

This is a cute book. I like that it explained how St. Patrick's Day falls in a time of in between weather and in between holidays.

I think what our family found bothersome is how the book jumps between the legends that go with St. Patrick and then the cubs falling asleep and having dreams about what they had just been taught, to then wake up and have pieces of their dream seem to exist in their real world. It's a lot of flip flopping around for a young kid. If the child you're buying this for is young, or you happen to have a super literal minded kiddo, you may consider something different.
