The cousin of the High King, Lyndi Chandali has lived with the constant threat of being pawned off as a political prize. A rare, female-born dragon like Lyndi can’t truly mate—not in the way it counts. Which is why she's kept her distance from a certain sinfully delicious Beta. Instead, she's built a life for herself giving orphaned dragons in the Americas a home.
As Beta of his team of enforcers, Levi Rowtag is a fighter first, last, and always. His job is to protect—his team, the shifters in his territory, and the stubborn woman hell-bent on fighting with him at every turn. He knows from the moment they first meet what she’ll never accept—they are destined to be mated.
But with the kings at war, the enemy is now coming for Lyndi. Worse, he’s coming for her orphans, too. He’ll have no choice but to defy his king and go rogue if he has any hope of protecting them all...and finally claiming his mate.

About the author

Bestselling and award-winning author, Abigail Owen, writes adult paranormal romance & upper YA fantasy romance. She loves plots that move hot and fast, feisty heroines with sass, heroes with heart, a dash of snark, and oodles of HEAs! Other titles include wife, mother, Star Wars geek, ex-competitive skydiver, spreadsheet lover, eMBA, organizational guru, Texan, Aggie, and chocoholic.
Abigail attempted to find a practical career related to her favorite pastime by earning a degree in English Rhetoric (Technical Writing) and an MBA. However, she swiftly discovered that writing without imagination is not nearly as fun as writing with it.
Abigail currently resides in Austin, Texas, with her own swoon-worthy hero, their angelic teenagers, and two adorable fur babies.

There was so very much going on in this book that I can’t really say a lot without spoiling something (so I won’t).
There are so many fascinating story lines that arc from the previous books in this series as well as from the Inferno Rising series since all the books are set in the same world. And what a fantastic ever-changing, magical world this is! It is so awe-inspiring to read and discover how this author weaves her tales between each character – whether they are human, phoenix, dragon or other shifter – and through the series set in these worlds she has created.
[This is from my review for the second book in the Inferno Rising series, The Blood King, but it applies here as well.] Books like this are the reason I love to read. There are some authors who are so adept at worldbuilding that opening their books and beginning to read transports you (back) into this magical place they have created. A world that sparks your imagination and allows you to see and feel the book come alive as you devour the pages. This author, with the Inferno Rising and Fire’s Edge series’, has created a world like this. A world where dragons (and bears and wolves) are real. Where they live and work alongside humans without us ever knowing, unless we are destined to become important to them. Where something as enchanting as mythical as a Phoenix can hide in plain sight, never revealing themselves for fear of losing their freedom or worse, their life. Where the strings of Fate wind between so many lives and bring surprises at every turn.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book through Netgalley and Entangled Publishing. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I’ve always had a soft spot for paranormal/shifter romance, and Abigail Owens always delivers as one of my top authors of the genre. I am easily able to lose myself in the incredible “alternate universes” she crafts with her words. Her writing is always so captivating, and this novel was no different.
The main characters were perfection! Lyndi and Levi were simultaneously strong and vulnerable and had aspects of their personalities (and their lives) that I’m sure every reader can relate to (at least on SOME level because I’m guessing the people reading this review probably can’t shift😉 lol.) Now I want my very own Levi just like Lyndi!
I happened to especially love Lyndi. I was rooting for her from the very beginning. Her perseverance and strength was admirable, overcoming and defying all that came with her unique situation.
I was blown away by author Abigail Owen’s writing! I love, love, love her style and how she developed the story as each chapter goes on. I cannot wait to get my hands on any/all of her future works to come!❤️💕 100/10! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

From the beginning of the story, it was easy to get lost in the pages because they were full of action, adventure, suspense, sexual tension, mystery, danger, and smoking hot romance. It’s literally an insta-attraction blaring bright turned to a simmering longing hidden by misunderstandings and events out of their control keeping them apart. But when they finally connect, they seriously smoke up the pages.
The world-building of this series was really great; it was easy to picture the scenes as they played out and I enjoyed the history and hierarchy of the dragons and the mates and different colored dragons’ interactions (some good, some bad). Lyndi’s orphans were a nice addition to the mix and I loved the cave troll. And again, the ending..sigh! The entire book was awesome!
*I received an arc of this book from NetGalley and I am voluntarily providing my honest review.
