This series has great characters, well developed and wildly diverse. The action seems a bit over the top, but it does keep the story moving.
I really like the way the lead character backs into almost all of her magical knowledge and that her training comes through necessity rather than tutoring. Seems more realistic somehow, even in an imaginary world.
Great way to take a break from hard sci-fi !

I am thoroughly enjoying this adventure, with Mattie as our main lead with an elven assassin at her side! The story is well paced the humour appeals to me and the Characters are well fleshed out. There is no cliff hangers in these books but there is an overall storyline happening with more of it being revealed in each book. I do enjoy the fact that the author has decided to have 2 things happening at once. The immediate story that starts and finishes with each book and the one simmering in the background.

I am currently reading the original series that this has been spun from, and if anyone else is like me and started this series first i do recommend they also give it a try as characters from that series feature often, and at times with great hilarity in this series.

Matti’s quest to find out about her mother continues, in this book we find her beginning to get closer to who could be imprisoning her. Her involvement with Sarrlevi continues to grow and despite several people doubting his sincerity Matti defends him, could that be because he brings her exotic cheeses from other planets, yum. Matti is growing closer to discovering more about her hammer too, despite previously using it to demolish walls. Can’t wait for the next book, sigh, could I please have a magical object to get Lindsay to type quicker.

I adore Sarrlevi and would be perfectly ok if Mataali’s aunt had a “accident”. This book has everything you have come to expect from this series; fights, explosions, snarky dragons, angry dwarves, cheese - the works! My only criticism is that the book felt to short, as if not an awful lot happened to move the story forward. Though I strongly suspect that is just to set things up right for book 5. Cant wait!

Honestly, I don't know how she does it. Time and again I vow to only read a little at a time and then abandon everything else to read the whole book at once.
Marti is a great character, well rounded and self aware, thrown into circumstances that threaten to destroy her and everyone around her. The development of Saarlevi is masterful, revealing just enough of his past and true base character to make his actions believeable. Love this series. Maybe more than Val's.
