Jennifer Serravallo is a New York Times bestselling author, literacy consultant, and frequent speaker at state and national conferences.
Her newest books are CONNECTING WITH STUDENTS ONLINE (2020) and TEACHING WRITING IN SMALL GROUPS (March 2021). Previous recent publications include A TEACHER'S GUIDE TO READING CONFERENCES (2019) and UNDERSTANDING TEXTS AND READERS (2018), as well as her hugely popular bestselling THE WRITING STRATEGIES BOOK (2017) and THE READING STRATEGIES BOOK (2015), both of which have been translated into French, Chinese, and Spanish. Her other popular titles include TEACHING READING IN SMALL GROUPS (2010), and THE LITERACY TEACHER'S PLAYBOOKS, for grades K-2 and grades 3-6 (2013, 2012). She is also the author of two Heinemann Digital Campus Courses entitled Strategies in Action (https://www.heinemann.com/products/dcocnrws00.aspx) and Teaching Reading in Small Groups: Matching Methods to Purposes.
Jen worked for eight years as a Senior staff developer and national consultant at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University. In this capacity, she helped urban, suburban, and rural schools implement exceptional literacy instruction through reading and writing workshops. Before that, she was a teacher in two NYC public schools.
Jen is known for creating books and resources that help make responsive, differentiated literacy instruction possible for all teachers. Her comprehension assessment and teaching resources, COMPLETE COMPREHENSION: FICTION and COMPLETE COMPREHENSION: NONFICTION, help teachers make sense of comprehension, especially in whole chapter books and book-length nonfiction texts. Jen holds a BA from Vassar College and an MA from Teachers College, where she has also taught graduate and undergraduate classes.
