In parts I really loved this book and couldn't put it down. In other parts it didn't really touch me as much. It is almost two different and unconnected stories of two people who both happen to make shoes . I absolutely loved the bits about Claire, working in a shoe factory in England. The writing here is brilliant and really made her come alive. I absolutely connected with it. But the parts about Arun, an elderly Indian man coming to terms with failing health and past weaknesses and faults, did not grab me so much . The writing is very good but I think I would have preferred a story just about Claire.

I enjoyed this book about 2 separate lives both linked by working with shoes. It was like being a fly on the wall and seeing these lives, warts and all. I found it fascinating and I loved how real the characters were with their thoughts and flaws laid bare.
