Prairie School is about a nine year old boy named Noah. He and his family have just moved from Maine to Colorado. He loves being there on the open prairie. He feels free. One day his mother tells his they are going to have a visitor. It's his Aunt Dora and she is coming to teach him to read. Naoh doesn't like the idea at all. Once Aunt Dora shows Noah her way of teaching he catches on and enjoys learning new things. The book is part of the I Can Read series. It's a level 4, for grade 2-4. This is a good introduction to historical fiction. I would recommed this book. It would make a great read aloud while learning about the 1880's.
Anything that children pick up and read is a success in my book as reading and comprehension are a life-long skills to be mastered. Level 4 was a little more in line with my grand daughter who is just turning 9., but I will buy her books that are a little more challenging. I wasn't sure how the grade levels matched reading skills. It is great to have books with some history and life lessons as opposed to all occult, mystery and murder that seems to dominate our society. Give your young one a little trip down memory lane of "This is what it used to be like..."
At first my daughter did not want to read this book - I think she thought it looked dull. No pink prancing ponies on the cover. Anyway... I read it to her and it is a really sweet story that looks back to life during a time when there were no video games or tv, and life was really a question of living off the earth and being inspired by the world around you. I enjoyed the story and once I read it to my daughter she enjoyed it too and asked me to read it to her again the following day. Encourages an love of nature and reading. A good story and heart-warming too.
This is a sweet book that I found on a homeschool reading list. My kids are in elementary school but I love to supplement their library at home with tried and true books. It was expensive to order at the website I found, but I knew I could hop over to my amazon prime account and maybe find it cheaper...and I did! Great book at a perfect grade level for 1st to 5th graders depending on child's reading abilities.
My kindergartener loves it when I read this book, and my sixth grader listens too. This is a great book to teach the importance of reading and how learning is applicable no matter where you live or what you do. It was recommended as part of a Charlotte Mason living books suggestion. Hopefully my kindergartener will want to read it on his own soon.
I bought this book for my 1st grader after reading all the good reviews. This surely is a wonderful book....very nice story. Lovely illustrations as well. My daughter finished it all in one evening before the bedtime and wanted to talk about it afterwards. Very good book for a young reader.
