2.0 out of 5 starsParent-friendly book

I'm sure it's all well-intentioned, instructive and educational but an epic poem was not something my 10 year-old son appreciated. I should have read the fine print!

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting way of storytelling indeed!

As a writer, reading a book that blends genres is a completely new idea to me. It was fascinating to see Lai tell a story through verse, albeit free verse. It is clear, simple, for beginner readers to understand (and especially great if you aren't used to poetry). I love that the titles hold their own subject very distinctly and the setting (time/place) is there at the end of every poem. It's a quick read and very entertaining one that informs the reader a little bit about what immigrating to another country to escape the horrors of war is like. She told the story very easily, with enough flow to keep me interested, and had each line, stanza, and word sound delicately and smoothly off my tongue. She focused on the little things, which is something that I, particularly, highly enjoy - things that most authors or poets would leave out but that matter just as much regardless. Even the way Lai handled dialogue vs summary in these poems seemed flawless. I felt that no information was lacking in each poem and every line of dialogue was crucial for a character to say. Well done!

This book was amazing! I (the reader) recommend the book for 12+ but it really just depends on how and what your kid or you like to read. The story is in the form of poetry and date entries. Absolutely recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetry as Novel - Brilliant!

I've never read a book of poetry cover-to-cover (Jelly Belly excepted) but this is so much more than poetry. It stands as I would say the defining novel of the Vietnamese immigrant experience in the US (not that I've read any other). It's an easy read that I would say is very relatable to anyone over 30 and probably many in their teens. It tackles tough issues without ever seeming preachy. Should be required reading for people convicted of hate crimes as part of their rehabilitation. Amongst the tear-evoking memories of the author are moments of humour, love, and kindness that makes it a bit of an emotional roller-coaster, but one well worth the price of admission.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful work of art

The author painted a full picture about people so call β€œboat men” by recalling her own life.
The artwork doesn’t contain bright and shinny color, but it is appealing enough for the reader/viewer to stop and think.
