This book had amazing world building and a fascinating magic system, I can’t wait to read the subsequent novels in this series!

3.0 out of 5 starsCreepy Hard Magic System
Reviewed in Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ on October 28, 2020
The hard magic system was easily the best aspect of this epic fantasy debut. The premise behind the magic, involving extracting bone shards from humans, was a wonderfully creepy concept. I really enjoyed the creation of the constructs, which reminded me of the magical programming in Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett. Fans of that other series will likely be interested in this one too.

Told over multiple perspectives, I found Lin's chapters to be the most engaging. I would have preferred if the entire story was told from her perspective. The other two characters were just not as compelling and I honestly struggled to connect with them for most of the book.

The story started out fairly slow, but it picked up towards the last third with some bug revelations and action packed scenes. It was satisfying to see the narrative threads come together into an exciting conclusion. As the first book in the series, this one had a lot of setup so I believe later books will be stronger.

I would recommend this novel for anyone looking for a new epic fantasy story with a hard magic system.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher.

I like the story, it was interesting don’t get me wrong and there was a good plot twist, but it just wasn’t amazing, I wanted to think so but it just lacked something and I’m not sure what, but I would still recommend it to fantasy lovers

Came in good condition and has a nice cover, love the idea of the book and younger readers would enjoy it but would've it more had it been done differently

I liked this book, I wish they would've put more action and buildup for how long this story is! Great storyline just wish there was more to it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Strong Concept, Execution Needs Work

I really enjoyed the magic system in this book and would have loved to spend more time on it. I found the shifts in perspective jarring and felt as though most of the characters blended together. I'm curious where the next book will go- Stewart has plenty of room to grow as an author and I believe she has potential.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent fantasy

This is a decent fantasy, if you l like ancient Asian fantasy. There are a few story lines to follow, so that was distracting to me. I didn't get into the book as much as I thought - hence the 3 stars.
