Disappointing to see a title that says " Finding modern truth in ancient wisdom" referring to the Bhagavad Gita as "cheap". The value of a book lies in its content, not its printing cost. I felt this author's title is not indicative of what is in the book. Although his book is quite expensive, I found his "wisdom" to be shallow. It was disappointing

Ancient philosophy presented through the lens of modern psychology and extrapolated into practical advice. A pleasant, easy to read presentation of 10 great ideas that have emerged in several of the world's great civilizations to address the question of what makes a happy life. Readers will likely have encountered many of these ideas before but Haidt presents them in a way that invites you to consider them in a logical sequence as each chapter / idea builds upon the last. The conclusion is inevitably unsatisfying in terms of answering the ultimate question but leaves the reader with many threads to follow for further reading into positive psychology and a wide range of inter-disciplinary topics.

It's a little like a movie that gets a bit long...it gets a bit long. Great and grateful read.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable and thought-provoking book. Jonathan Haidt was able to put his own prejudices aside in the style of a true scientist and present evidence as to whether our ideas about what makes us happy work or don't work. He is involved in trying to understand in minute detail the factors which motivate humanity towards certain behaviours. He presents evidence which explains how our biology, our brain functioning may result in certain social behaviour and how this has in effect created the human animal in all its manifestations. I would have liked the book to be longer, and for him to have cited more examples. However, the book gave me a fresh perspective on a number of issues and helped me understand others in a new and more thorough way. He manages to do this with humour and a sense of fun which make me wish he'd been my college professor.

I enjoy reading books that expand my vision of the world; this is one of those. The only missed points, for me, were around religion and left vs right politics, both items are too much USA-centric and added nothing of value for me.

Absolutely great book! Great insight, great perspectives and really fun to read. A very complete overview of how the mind (both conscious and subconscious) work and their effect on us. Great ideas presented on how we can achieve happiness. Highly recommended!
