How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poetic but very, very slow

I personally wasn't the greatest fan of the way this book has been written. It switches between different points of view each chapter, in which memories of entire lives are discussed in a random order, making it quite hard to keep track of what happened to who and when. I thought it explored the characters' pasts so deeply that there wasn't much of a plot to the story. I can see why lots of people like it as it is very poetically and thoughtfully written, I can appreciate that, however, I felt it was too slow to really enjoy.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Big 'So What?'

This was so contrived and sophomoric. I truly don't understand why everyone has made such a big fuss. As an African-American reader, I was not surprised by any aspects of the story-line or history (e.g. Tulsa massacre). This felt like a writer trying to fill a basket with 'provocative' issues, most of which were unexplained, and not take too many pages to do so. Characters were not fully developed. Situations were introduced to pull at the heart strings. My book club hard to try hard to get about 30 minutes of discussion of this book! A big waste of time!!!

My book club read this book and we all felt that it was confusing and disjointed. Best read in audible form so that you can tell who was talking. I had to go back 3-4 pages several times to see whose story I was reading. There complex characters of Aubrey, Sabe and Po' Boy and, Aubrey's mother would have made excellent stories in themselves. I am sorry that more time was not given to learn more about these characters. I was left with so many questions when I finished there book. Very disappointing..

I wanted to understand this book but I was lost. I struggled with flashbacks in time, and the ending was abrupt and confused me further.

2.0 out of 5 stars Quick read

Red at the Bone was a quick read easy to comprehend. In the past I've enjoyed this type of writing style. However, I felt the characters in this book weren't fleshed out enough. Everyone seemed to only have one trait that continued not matter what point in their life we were seeing. There doesn't seem to be any growth in the characters.

I’m feel really unsatisfied after reading this, like I just scratched the surface of the characters’ stories. I would not recommend.
