I'm sure the author is spectacular as a poet given his ability to convey emotion with creative metaphors and abstract phrases, but as a novel this was difficult to read; Not difficult because it was complex but difficult because it failed on so many fronts. It was like a poem on steroids, with every other sentence containing some abstract thought, description, etc. If it were seasoning the meal would be ruined because instead of sprinkling his poetic skills throughout the novel the author just dumps the whole jar in.
I found it to be unreadable and I am truly, truly shocked by the number of great authors who praise this book. It's not the content but how strikingly the author fails at craft.
