5.0 out of 5 starsGreat read…..
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on May 24, 2023
It was recommended to be read by my bookclub. I was not keen as this was about a Librarian again as so many of the previously chosen have been. However this one turned out different and was a true surprise and I can only recommend it whole heartedly!!!!

3.0 out of 5 starsLost me in the middle

This book lost me somewhere in the middle. I found myself searching for more information about Belle Marion Greener online, instead of reading the novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read

The elegant language clearly defines the educated upper class during the early1900's. One not only meets the rich & famous of New York & Europe, but also the artistic items they must acquire to display their enormous wealth. Based on a true story, the novel's constant thread teaches the reader of the "acceptable" racial & gender divisions of the period.

4.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal mind

Story of a black woman forced to ‘pass’s white in order to use her phenomenal mind and skills to build one of the top library/ museums in the world. I did skip a few pages when they were listing books snd paintings by the score but that was a necessary part to unveil her tremendous talents. If I knew more I would have been even more impressed I suppose. This was 100 years ago. Have we improved even an inch?

I enjoyed every second of this book. She must have been a truly remarkable woman, in a time when it was difficult to be anything more than a "housewife".

A quick read. Epilogue and authors info explains historic references and latitude used to produce this book. Expect women to enjoy this book more. Set in Edwardian period and into 20's.
