4.0 out of 5 starsIf it's not horror it's another
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on January 31, 2023
While reading this book I vascilated between wanted greater detail and dreading what was next. There was a compelling feeling to tell others about each succeeding horror as it leaders darker and darker territory.
Each fresh page tells of the man child who really didn't want the office other than for glory. There was no history or even interest in public service. No idea of how the government worked or the limits to power. No compunction about whom to hire, fire, destroy, banish or promote on any basis except loyalty to Trump.
MH chronicles many details and one must think there are many more omitted. A second volume would make us laugh and weep and despair further.

3.0 out of 5 starsRehashes old news

There was very little in this book that surprised me. Form reading other books and news stories this book seems to condense, summarize and repeat already known information. The writing style can also make it a little difficult to read. I found myself rereading many passage to try and understand what was really being said. A good summary of the life of Donald Trump and his presidency, but in my view lacks the depth I was looking for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly researched but grammatically challenged at times

I enjoyed this book and admire the author’s writing in the NY Times. It was very thoroughly researched, and I learned things about DJT that I did not know before. My criticisms of the book may be due to poor editing. For example, the first half of the book in particular seemed to lack an arc, with the subject matter jumping around quite a bit, even within a single page. It improved somewhat in this regard in the final half. Also, the author seems to have a great love of run-on sentences, and seldom did a few pages go by without a comma filled whopper of a sentence. I mostly blame poor editing for my criticism(s) and I do recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A scary view of DJTs narcissism.

I had followed most of these stories in the past but when confronted by multiple lines of evidence about DJTs reprehensible behavior, it’s impossible to conclude anything other than guilty as charged. I highly recommend reading this book. As a society we need to prevent such a narcissist from reaching the ultimate position of power ever again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maggie Haberman knows her subject well - very well

Maggie Haberman's chronicle of the rise of Trump and Trumpism is heavily researched and documented and based on decades of reporting on Trump and his many businesses. It's not a quick read but it is so well written you just keep coming back. Her periodic observations in brackets are priceless and always add an extra dose of fact. Her writing is at all times balanced and objective; not an easy task given the subject and some pretty controversial subject matter. This is perhaps one of the best explorations of Trump world written to date. When added to the growing body of literature, this will stand the test of time.

Well written description of the Trump era. Most of the book summarizes information already reported in most newspapers. Nothing too earth shattering.

I don't know when I will ever learn!!! Maggie is a great reporter there is no question about that but the subject matter has been beaten to death. With a whole library of books on the infamous DJT and our constant immersion in his daily circus by the the media. The last thing we need is another book about the orange guy. He has made sure we don't forget him every day for the past 7 years.

Nothing in here is new but is a very detailed compilation of his activities ever since he was born. Kind of a Reader's Digest version of everything we have all read or heard countless other times. So if you have never read a Trump book or never listen to the news, then I would recommend it. Otherwise save your money.

A factual and to the point account of why Trump is who he is. Unlike other authors, Maggie does not editorialize every action of Trump and others in his circle. She just states the facts and let’s the reader form their own opinion of the situations and moves on. A great read.
