To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
This collection from Vuong is stark and intimate and nothing like his first poetry book. Night sky was no doubt personal but Vuong made sure to keep just enough distance so the reader could make up their mind. But this right here. He is front and center and he is letting everything out. He of course talks about his mother who passed but there are also references to personal drug use which was eye opening. Vuong was on a mission to purge his heart and mind so do not come into this collection expecting traditional elements of poetry like structure, sound and rhythm. It’s just not here and that’s ok because this new writing style of his is such a breath of fresh air. I feel like prominent poets of this era try so hard to win a Pulitzer they let all emotion out the door. But this book does not disappoint. Change is inevitable and most of the time necessary.
