That book has been reducing my anxiety more effectively than any therapy. It modified my outlook on life in a beautiful way.

3.0 out of 5 starsThe irony : this book is a waste of time
Reviewed in Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ on March 14, 2023
I am stopping after 40 pages because the author has been repeating the same introductory idea ("time management is actually NOT what we should be focusing on") without giving me the slightest glimpse into what I can expect after he is done with this seemingly endless, empty introduction. Cut to the chase, don't waste our time.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little bit disheartening

The premise of course is that you basically have 4,000 weeks in a lifetime. The surprise is that the author uses this amount of time in the perspective of overall history to emphasize just how little this will matter in the grand scheme of things.

While the main idea being that you shouldn't place too much importance on the tasks that other people have on your to-do lists when the outcomes aren't really that meaningful - what was appealing is that you should instead focus on what will bring you and your North Star goals the most meaning and happiness. After all as a famous band once belted out, 'We're here for a good time, not a long time...."

Definitely worth a read, and I'll be rereading it again once it has some time to sit with me - Here is hoping that the second reading will be able to pull out some bigger nuggets to share with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impactful

The book has its problems. It says things I wouldn’t agree with and the only way I am reconciling it is by chalking it out to difference of perceived meanings. It feels repetitive at times to the point where I feel if I accidentally flipped back to the previous chapter (it’s a single message after all). It walks the thin line on the boundary to something quite like nihilism (but stays firmly in being realistic). But, it is an eye-opening read, at least for me. It feels weird to say that practicing a few things mentioned in the book does make me feel a little bit more liberated and a little bit more ready to not obsess over the future. It’s weird that I found a strategy to deal with my perfectionism in a time management book.

5.0 out of 5 stars For all you fresh-start addicts out there!

If all your time management strategies have sapped life of joy and true connection, spend some time with this book. You'll find several paths into life's messiness and wonder, and a few paths out of any misguided quest to tame it all into pointless units of efficiency. I highly recommend Four Thousand Weeks as a delightful and delightfully wise antidote for all you fellow fresh-start addicts out there!

For overthinkers everywhere. A gentle reminder of our human limitations. Kudos to Mr. Burkeman for a wonderfully thoughtful book. Highly recommended for those with existential anxiety.

Four Thousand Weeks is actually more of a book of philosophy that a productivity book, albeit a very accessible and practical one. I can already tell I’ll be mulling its lesson over for many weeks to come. Highly recommended.

I don’t usually read full non-fiction books but I did with this one. And re-read my highlighted notes. Superb, original and gave me peace of mind about my life, my goals and my expectations.

Finally, an anti time management book. This will help anyone who wants to recover from mindless efficiency. Highly recommended - but not for people looking for the latest quick fix.
