4.0 out of 5 starsOrwellian-like tale of what has been and what may become

Scary to think this is not far from reality. When lives are stressful or disappointing, there is a tendency to find a scapegoat. While it does occur in the world, letโ€™s hope our society has learned enough from past history to prevent this from becoming pervasive.

Not my favourite writing style. Not a fan of dialogue in the style.
The start is slow, part 2 is great and part 3 a bit anticlimactic. Would give a four except for dialogue style.

Very slow. The characters didnโ€™t engage me. I gave up after 35%. I loved her other two books so I was very disappointed

2.0 out of 5 stars A let down

This book was such a let down for me. The characters felt so distant -- I had no attachment to any. The story development far too long. There were important concepts and ideals but overall the wind up was just too dull and too long to keep me. I only finished this book to be able to discuss at book club.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing!

Was very disappointed. Book just went on and on. It seemed to take forever to say the same thing, like how many different ways can I describe a situation or feeling. It had a message definitely but she just took so very long to get to the point. Just didn't like it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Derivative, flat, DNF
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on October 18, 2022

Too pokey, dilatory scenes that remind me of other, older allegories I've already read. It's fine to tell an old story with a new twist--but enough with the old story--give me the new twist!

It's also trying not to be YA.

I applaud Ng's cause--the discrimination against Asian Americans, which is a theme in all her books. But the bones and even some of the meat of the story didn't bring anything new here, nothing that I could see in the first 100 or so pages. It felt flat and derivative, with too much exposition. And she made her point, and then kept making it without any liftoff.

I like this author, but am having a terrible time finishing this book. I'm 2/3 through and have tried multiple times to continue, but it's just boring.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing

Disappointing story and annoying narration on Audible. I was excited my book club chose this one as I enjoyed Ngโ€™s previous works, but sadly it was a let down. When I was running out of time for the bookclub meeting & had to resort to Audible for some of the novel, the narration was simply unbearable. Sorry to say I canโ€™t recommend this one to anyone (especially as an audiobook).

2.0 out of 5 stars Dull and definitely not her best

I still think Everything I Never Told You was by far Ng's best book. This one was a disappointment as she had a clear agenda, and that wasn't necessarily to write a great book.

2.0 out of 5 stars A book that lost its way
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on December 11, 2022

Our Missing Hearts starts out with a good and very relevant premise, but in my opinion, it loses its way about one-third of the way through. The ending is a let down as well. Not for me.

I did not enjoy this book because itโ€™s slow, insufficient narrative, excessive descriptors, and based on flawed assumptions . Overall, I struggled to finish!

2.0 out of 5 stars too many words

Commentary on blaming Asians for current ills involved too much luxuriating in the prose. I kept falling asleep. The conclusion was inventive but required to much work to get there
