As a Reiki 1 practitioner, and an avid fan of Penczak's, I find myself rather disappointed by this book. I had high hopes of this book, and very little of them were satisfied.
First off, do not pick up this book in the hopes of learning Reiki. Penczak does not teach you how to do it - you must receive an attunement, and he lists various reasons why one shouldn't try it if they haven't received said attunement. I was curious whether or not he would try to teach people about it in this book, and he didn't.
But, if you want a deep background history of Reiki, including theories of his, and his peers, this book is great. About half of it consists of these theories and background information. However, if you want to use Reiki, and the symbols that consist of the other half, you need to be attuned to at least the first level of Reiki. Therein is the problem - if you're attuned to level one, you should have learned almost all of that history before you received the attunement.
I also found myself rather disappointed in 'magickal' aspect of this book. It was woefully short, and simply went on to explain how Reiki, along with symbols, could be used to cure people, and heal ailments - physical, mental and emotional. But Reiki could do that already, before this book, and before these symbols.
Magick aside, these symbols are incredibly useful. I haven't tried any of them yet, but I certainly plan to.
Overall, I believe Penczak tries to reach out to all audiences with this book, however, the bulk of it is targeted towards existing Reiki practitioners. An interesting read, nonetheless.
Very interesting and well written. However, a few slight problems. Some of the newer symbols, like Harth and Halu, differ from what other sources say. Double check each one before you use to make sure you’re drawing correctly. When I searched the correct symbols I learned that Karuna Reiki and Tera Mai symbols come from Kathleen Milner supposedly meeting Sathya Sai Baba on the astral plane. Not Sai Baba of Shridi, a real holy man, but the guy with the Afro who loved money. You can search out his child molestation charges if you’re interested. But being from India, my family has met the guy on the physical plane—he demanded money and that my (idiot) uncle not marry without his permission. He had to break off one engagement because Sathya said no. Nicolas Maduro, the dictator who is running Venezuela into the ground and starving his people to death, is also a follower. So you can understand why I wouldn’t touch anything that may or may not have come from him. *shudders* Wish that had been explained in this book.
Could have used some more info on performing attunements as well (I’m a reiki master). Other books tell you how to give attunements to crystals and pets.
