I loved every part of this challenging read. After leading for many years, this book took me to places I have been and turned away from. Leading change is difficult and Tod helped me see how I can be tempered to become the leader God wants me to be.

The book arrived early which is always good. The condition of the book was excellent. There were a few lightly underlined passages but did not affect the readability of the book.

While knowing WHAT to do is a vital part of leadership, an often overlooked part of leadership is the inner struggle and resilience necessary to face the inevitable challenges of leadership. This book helps equip you with the mindset to endure trials with resilience. If you want to last the long haul as a leader, read this book.

I found myself saying “Yes! So true” very often. I appreciate Bolsinger’s personal stories and vulnerability through the book integrated with the imagery of blacksmithing. He adeptly draws on deep relationship with God and others, profound spiritual practice, as well as synthesizing the best from the adaptive leadership and change management worlds! Every leader in a ministry context would do well to read and absorb this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book on leading an organization through adaptive change

I was given a pre-release version of this book to read and review. I found it so useful that I purchased copies to give to our team. Tod Bolsinger combines a gift for storytelling (I love his use of the blacksmith's craft as an illustration for how resilient leaders are formed) with the academic work of authors like Edwin H. Friedman and Ronald A. Heifetz into a mix tempered by his experience helping to adapt Fuller Theological Seminary for thriving in an uncertain, unpredictable future.

This book is about leading adaptive change. Problems requiring adaptive change to solve “cannot be solved with one’s existing knowledge, skills and tools, requiring people to make a shift in values, expectations, attitudes or habits of behavior.” They are “systemic problems with no clear answers.” Adaptive changes are contrasted with technical problems that can be addressed with “application of current knowledge, skills and tools to resolve a situation.”

Bolsinger's counsel can help us avoid what he labels as the the failure of nerve and the failure of heart so common among those leading adaptive change efforts. If was limited to recommending one book to leaders facing adaptive change it would be this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The question is can I survive it

Tod Bolsinger's brilliant new book 'Tempered Resilience' is perfect for any Christian leaders or pastors out there who are leading change, Tod Bolsinger's book is brilliant. He starts the book with the statement, "the question I find myself asking is not 'Can I learn the skills I need to lead change?' but rather 'Can I survive it?".
Tempered Resilience serves as a great accompaniment to Tod's classic book 'Canoeing the Mountains' which helps leaders in adaptive change.

He shares that, "People who are willing to take risks of exercising leadership do so on behalf of something they care deeply about."

What I appreciate about Tod's wise counsel is that it can help many leaders survive what he calls the 'failure of nerve and the failure of heart' which is so common among those leading adaptive change. He shares, "the forming of a resilient leader that occurs amid the very demands of leadership is an ongoing, intense, repetitive and humbling process of personal transformation."

It is honestly full of so much wisdom, highly recommend, it is so life giving.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All who are Leading
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 10, 2020

For all those who find themselves in a leadership position and feel the pressures, stresses, insecurities and uncertainty of leadership in a changing world, Tempered Resilience is a beacon of light in the fog. Tod provides a clear picture of what it takes for a leader to be forged and equipped to lead at this time of history. Our staff will be using Tempered Resilience as a resource to build the personal and community practices that allow us to be forged as a team to lead in our day. The strength of this book is that it provides very practical disciplines and action steps which allow us to use our past and current experiences to be formed into resilient leaders.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to find encouragement in the journey and anyone that is committed to the long process of being formed into a tempered leader that is able to meet the challenges of leadership.

5.0 out of 5 stars Becoming a Leader Capable of Leading Adaptive Change
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 16, 2021

Tempered Resilience is a timely and helpful companion to Tod Bolsinger's previous book, Canoeing the Mountains. Whereas Canoeing the Mountains powerfully and effectively helps leaders learn the process of leading through an adaptive challenge, Tempered Resilience explores the hard work of becoming the type of leader that can initiate change and stay the course. The use of the metaphor drawn from "blacksmithing" is effective and helpful.

In a day when many leaders, including pastoral leaders, are worn down by the multiple challenges they faced in 2020 and are tempted to walk away, Tempered Resilience addresses the difficult challenge of becoming more resilient with honesty and candor, accompanied by specific practices and commitments that allow God to do the work inside the leader that will sustain her or him in the struggle. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Leadership in times of challenges

After enjoying reading 'Canoeing the Mountains' I was drawn to this next book by Tod Bolsinger. These past 18 months have been challenging for all leaders with unprecedented obstacles that made leading difficult if not impossible. His observation that leaders are suffering from Failures of Nerve and Failures of Heart were helpful in providing a model for navigating the leadership challenges. His suggestions were practical and relevant. I recommend it to leaders who are lifelong learners.
