A thorough resource on using the VIA strengths. Excellent for a coaching practice as it gives practical exercises (interventions) to give to clients.
The book includes information on how to present the tools to clients, and most importantly it provides the 70 strengths interventions with handouts for practitioners to give to their clients.
I particularly enjoyed the tailored interventions which group a handful of interventions to use for specific situations that you may encounter in coaching such as: “boosting happiness”, overcoming “languishing “ etc.
Dr. Niemic has created what I believe is the most comprehensive and sophisticated book on using strengths published to date. He uses the VIA assessment of character strengths as the center piece for discussing strengths intervention but this book is appropriate to people using any strengths assessment or intervention strategy. Niemic does an excellent job reviewing the relevant research. Unlike many previous publications on strengths, however, he discusses conceptual ways to translate these research findings into day-to-day therapy and coaching practice. He synthesizes the best thinking from the leading scholars in the topic and adds his own expertise and experience to create a practical guide that attends to situations, culture, language, identity, and other critical aspects of strengths. The book is primarily intended for individual practitioners and is not heavy on attention to team strengths. Despite this, the book is a must for anyone who endeavors to use strengths in their practice.
Exactly the book I was looking for! The book begins with a brief explanation of the concept of character strengths and how to help children and adults grow and flourish by using their strengths as tools, rather than defining them by their weaknesses. The author then offers concrete examples of how character traits may be used for personal and professional growth, exploring optimal use, overuse and underuse, and offering a variety of intervention strategies. This book is extremely helpful to me as an educator but appears to also be written with therapists, social workers or other clinicians in mind. An expensive purchase but one I will refer back to often.
If you know anything about VIA Character Strengths, you're going to want this book. It is the ultimate character strengths practitioner's guide, with enough substantive material to fill a whole series of practitioner books. It's layer upon layer of information, ideas, insights, and tools - a joy to read, and to use.
This book is pricey, but if you care about your own development or coaching others, it is worth it three or four times over. Lots of informing activities, and descriptions of what is being asked of the reader. I rarely post five-star book reviews, but this book is worth it.
LOVE this book! So many amazing tables, diagrams, and summary sections to break up the text. Such an interesting read, FULL of useful tools and exercises. Every section brings with it applicable and interesting info. You can skip ahead to any section that piques your interest, without having to read the chapter before. It's everything you need to know about Character Strengths in one handy place. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I am applying positive psychology in Costa Rica with workshops and this book have activities that help to Make a practical positive psychology workshop, in Grupo Motiva CR we are happy to fine this recourse.
