5.0 out of 5 starsMust read for anyone interested in becoming a PM
Reviewed in Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ on July 10, 2014
Cracking the PM Interview: How to Land a Project Manager Job in Technology is a comprehensive guide to getting a job as a Product Manager in the world of IT and succeeding at it.

The authors, Gayle Laakmann McDowell and Jackie Bavaro, skillfully walk you through preparing yourself for a PM career, landing the job and excelling at it.

Here are some of the topics the book goes through:

- What is product management?
- Does project management vary at different companies? (The book looks at the usual big names in tech, as well as some up and coming startups)
- What does a good product manager resume look like?
- How do you transition from a different background to a project manager role?
- How do you prepare for a project manager interview? (This is where the meat of the book is. The authors go into detail about different types of questions and overall strategies)
- How do you succeed once you do get that job as a project manager?

Having worked and interviewed at some of the companies mentioned in the book, I found the advice to be highly relevant, extremely well-crafted and super useful.

This book is a must buy if you are considering interviewing for a PM role.

This book is an expanded version of Gayle's online YouTube video, which I would recommend you take a look at first before purchasing. Personally, I found that reading the book provides a high level overview and some good detailed techniques, but the interviewers for product management roles have caught on to many of the things in this book and candidates generally already have this in their tool belt. The book is really meant to level the playing field, so in that sense do buy the book, but ultimately it will really come down to how well you differentiate yourself in the interviews.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not For Seasoned Product Managers

This book is definitely not for seasoned product managers trying to secure their next great role. It’s meant for fresh out of school or individuals transitioning to Product Management from another career path. There were also quite a few grammatical errors early on, which made it hard to read at times. I would say if you have never had a Product role, it’s probably useful to a decent extent, but if you’re more seasoned, look elsewhere, it won’t provide too much meaningful information that you don’t already know.

Utterly useless before chapter 4. Focuses too much on big Silicone Valley companies. Full of shallow content without context. Definitely not what I expected.

Like many other MBA students, I aspired to break into product management post-graduation.
This book was extremely helpful for learning what the role of a PM is all about, how it varies from company to company, what a typical day in the life is like, and some high level interview advice.

I do have two criticisms for this book however:
1. The content is definitely dated and feels like it was last updated over a decade ago. The book lists Yahoo as one of the top companies for PMs and goes in depth alongside companies like Google, Microsoft, etc. It also says Facebook has very stringent technical requirements for PMs. That is actually no longer true and hasn't been true for several years. Facebook doesn't ask any technical questions in their PM interviews.
2. Given the name of the title, I thought the book would focus more on the actual interview questions and answers and less on explaining the role.

Don't get me wrong, the other material in the book is still valuable for newbies but if you are already a PM and know the basics, only one third of the book is actually interview prep material. If your goal is interview prep, I'd recommend reading two other books.
1. Swipe to Unlock: The Primer on Technology and Business Strategy - This book was written by PMs at Google, Facebook, and Microsoft to break down the core concepts of tech and business strategy that all PMs should know. The book is essentially a collection of mini case studies on all aspects of tech strategy, featuring pretty much every notable tech company (e.g. Google, Uber, Robinhood, etc.)
2. Decode and Conquer: Answers to Product Management Interviews - This book was written by a former Microsoft PM and it's essentially what I was expecting Cracking the PM Interview to be like: a super focused interview book with great frameworks and tons of example PM interview questions and answers.

By reading these two books, I was able to get Product Manager offers from both Apple and Amazon straight out of business school without prior product management experience!

tldr; If you are new to product management, buy this book immediately. If you are already a Product Manager and just looking to brush up for an interview, read Decode and Conquer and Swipe to Unlock instead.

2 stars because I was really expecting more ! It's a very generalist book for people reaaaaaaally outside PM.
You can learn much more on the PM role by reading blogs of company building great products.
The info given for the case interview is very poor, it's mentionning Porter 5 forces or SWOT !!
Not to mention the section on analytics which is very empty.
The best is perhaps that the authors recommend the use of Google Analytics ! Mixpanel, amplitude or kissmetrics would have been ok, but not Google Analytics, it's a terrible tool not used by startups today..

So yeah, buy the kindle edition, less than 10 box, if you need general info, but do not expect too much.
And remember that this book was published in april 2014, more than 2 years ago, and startups are evolving very fast.

This eBook is pretty lousy. Clearly not a lot of effort was spent formatting it for mobile, and it shows. Additionally, the content is pretty lackluster and most of it is rather obvious.

Speaks of the PM role in various industries but nothing in terms of helping you prepare for actual interviews. I recommend Decode and Conquer by Lewis C. Lin instead
