Cracking the PM Interview: How to Land a Project Manager Job in Technology is a comprehensive guide to getting a job as a Product Manager in the world of IT and succeeding at it.

The authors, Gayle Laakmann McDowell and Jackie Bavaro, skillfully walk you through preparing yourself for a PM career, landing the job and excelling at it.

Here are some of the topics the book goes through:

- What is product management?
- Does project management vary at different companies? (The book looks at the usual big names in tech, as well as some up and coming startups)
- What does a good product manager resume look like?
- How do you transition from a different background to a project manager role?
- How do you prepare for a project manager interview? (This is where the meat of the book is. The authors go into detail about different types of questions and overall strategies)
- How do you succeed once you do get that job as a project manager?

Having worked and interviewed at some of the companies mentioned in the book, I found the advice to be highly relevant, extremely well-crafted and super useful.

This book is a must buy if you are considering interviewing for a PM role.

This book is an expanded version of Gayle's online YouTube video, which I would recommend you take a look at first before purchasing. Personally, I found that reading the book provides a high level overview and some good detailed techniques, but the interviewers for product management roles have caught on to many of the things in this book and candidates generally already have this in their tool belt. The book is really meant to level the playing field, so in that sense do buy the book, but ultimately it will really come down to how well you differentiate yourself in the interviews.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for experienced product managers!

Product: Good overview of roles and interview processes! But too birds-eye/basic to be of use to experienced product managers. Definitely not for someone looking for a more technical approach to product management, very soft skill oriented.
Seller/Shipping: Item reached on time albeit with a couple dents/nicks. Nothing too bad, but I had to tape mine up just to get over the OCD.

Highly recommended reading if you're looking to be a PM, especially if you're coming from a non-PM role (e.g. engineer or UX designer). Goes through what to expect in an interview and how to prepare for one. Good sample questions to get you thinking out of the box.

I liked how it was broken down and through examples really set the tone of what mindset tech companies are looking for in their candidates, as well as where I should gather more experience

If you're transferring into the PM world this is simply the best book. 3 skill sets a PM has to have are design, technical and project management / business understanding. All covered in great depth in this book. It even goes to greater depths in explaining how you should position yourself and prepare your resume, etc. I learned a great deal from it and thanks to this book I'm now much better prepared for PM interviews.

For an incredibly long time I have had problems trying to articulate what on earth of Product Manager or Program Manager does. This book nails it on the head. I think even if you are not interviewing, this is a great book for PM's/PD's to review, as it helps remind you of things you may want to revisit in your own career (at a holistic level).

PLUS! you get excellent resume tips...
