5.0 out of 5 starsVery useful

A very good guideline for software engineers/developers. However, beginners will need fundamental knowledge before reading this. For experienced professionals, it is a great content to refresh their memory. This book doesn't go in-depth on data structures and algorithms, so another reference book may be needed.

3.0 out of 5 starsCrappy counterfiet book, wonderful content.
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on October 29, 2016
I was very disappointed with the book when I received it. The content of the book is great and helped me get an internship in one of the big four, but the build quality of it was very bad.

The book looks like a cheap backyard counterfiet version. The colors on the cover page are not aligned, the pages are printed skewed and with a ink jet of very cheap laser printer, the paper is cheap and yellowish, some pages are not evenly. Some are not even cut!

I asked for a replacement or a refund, the company emailed me a few times saying that they would send me a new book, then they said they had already reimbursed me (which was wrong), then sais they would check if they reimbursed me, and finally said that they would recheck. I haven't had any news since two weeks.

Pretty much a hard requirement if you want to interview at your MSFTs and AMZNs. However, aside from condensing everything into one location and forcing you to think of your own test cases (which is beneficial), I remain to be convinced that there's a HUGE amount of extra value over leetcode, geeksforgeeks etc. In either case, if you did 189 algorithms/design questions, you will probably pass that part of the interview. The terse language used can be jarring at times, because some of the descriptions do lack depth. I recommend the book, but to get the max benefit, I'd recommend having at least a cursory understanding of all the data structures and concepts, because this book is not a good introduction.

I completely skipped the coding problems in this book as that's what Leetcode is there for nowadays. I still found it to be highly valuable for its other contents, like what are the specifics of certain companies, what to expect from system design interviews, how to handle behavioral questions, what to do when you get stuck at coding problems etc. Ended up getting multiple offers :)

I read through the entire book and the examples in the book really help you understand some baseline knowledge but also helps you prepare for those hard interviews questions

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for preparing for Google Interview

Good book, a lot of good practice examples with multiple possible solutions shown at the end. Would have liked to see a more thorough review of algorithms, and better strategies for how to initially break down a large problem.

Does require some prior data structures and algorithms knowledge as Gayle doesn't go deeply into every topic. However as an interview prep guide it works great!

You only need the first 5 chapters for back-end programming positions. Very comprehensive book that is also similar to programming competition questions.
