3.0 out of 5 starsCrappy counterfiet book, wonderful content.
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on October 29, 2016
I was very disappointed with the book when I received it. The content of the book is great and helped me get an internship in one of the big four, but the build quality of it was very bad.

The book looks like a cheap backyard counterfiet version. The colors on the cover page are not aligned, the pages are printed skewed and with a ink jet of very cheap laser printer, the paper is cheap and yellowish, some pages are not evenly. Some are not even cut!

I asked for a replacement or a refund, the company emailed me a few times saying that they would send me a new book, then they said they had already reimbursed me (which was wrong), then sais they would check if they reimbursed me, and finally said that they would recheck. I haven't had any news since two weeks.

Pretty much a hard requirement if you want to interview at your MSFTs and AMZNs. However, aside from condensing everything into one location and forcing you to think of your own test cases (which is beneficial), I remain to be convinced that there's a HUGE amount of extra value over leetcode, geeksforgeeks etc. In either case, if you did 189 algorithms/design questions, you will probably pass that part of the interview. The terse language used can be jarring at times, because some of the descriptions do lack depth. I recommend the book, but to get the max benefit, I'd recommend having at least a cursory understanding of all the data structures and concepts, because this book is not a good introduction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Changed the way I looked at a lot of problems

This is a really good book. It has a lot of really good problems, amazing career advice, and just a lot of worthwhile content for the price. My favourite thing about this book is how it explains how you should get in the habit of being able to do the same problem different ways or look at it at a different angle. Sure, you might be able to write a one line hack that solves a problem quickly and very efficiently, but what if you had to solve it another way, using a much more unconventional approach?

Personally I'm working towards being a sysadmin/database admin and programming isn't the main focus of my education but the more I use it the more I can see it being a required skill for employment as I approach my now graduating year. Also this book has motivated me to learn Java much better.

Anyway aside from all the great programming advice, it also offers some really nice insights into the hiring process of very high end tech companies and also things you should do to improve your chance of being hired.. and I can tell you it doesn't always come down to how well you can solve complex problems.

CS student here, though I have learned data structures and algorithms in school, this book is still helpful. I guess the approach to writing algorithmic interviews is different than algorithm assignment. In assignment you only write sudo code and does not care about readbility and as long as the time and space complexity are met with good proof you are good, but in interviews you also have to care about how to write concise code and there are some paradigms you can follow to approach algorthmic questions.
