3.0 out of 5 stars This is not a lighthearted friends to lovers story.

After reading She Drives Me Crazy, I wanted to read everything Kelly Quindlen had to offer because she knocked it out of the park with that book.

This book is definitely not She Drives Me Crazy. When I was telling my friend about Her Name in the Sky, I said "so dark," at least four times in a row. These wasn't exactly the high school falling in love story that I was expecting.

Hannah and Baker were cute together and would have made an adorable love story had it not been for everything that happened between. Even the friend group would have been endearing. Sort of this chosen family, us against the world type group. And overall, the story has a good message.

The reason why I only gave it three stars was for a couple reasons. I'm terrible at math, but I'm pretty sure 90% of the chapters take place at a party and everyone is drunk. It got so repetitive, reading chapter after chapter of yet another drunken party. I started skipping quite a few pages at a time. Eventually I skipped the entire middle of the book (I did go back to read some of it because I wanted to see what the email was about).

Then there is Clay. I thought, in the beginning, that he would be that person who puts his own feelings aside to be an actual decent friend to the two women he claims to care about. I kept hoping, especially after I (correctly) assumed he was the one who walked in on Hannah and Baker in the garage. Nope. He keeps letting his "girlfriend" suffer knowing he's not the person that she's wants to be with. She was miserable and drinking heavily, but hey, at least he was getting what he wanted. Even after he confessed to Hannah that he knew about her and Baker, he said he never said anything because he wanted to date Baker and didn't want to hate Hannah. What kind of garbage person would hate one of his best friends just because she's found love with someone he likes. In the end, he's sorry for the friend group breaking up, not for adding to his friends' pain. I really disliked him, but I don't think the reader is supposed to.

Overall, the book as okay. I liked Hannah and Baker and I think that this book could be really good for the right type of reader (obviously, because it is rated highly). Religion does play a huge part in this book, not just as something in the background that's creating the conflict, but it's almost like another character. As someone who was raised Irish Catholic and is now an atheist, it got to be a little much for me at times, but like I said for someone else this could be a great book.

3.0 out of 5 stars a heartbreaking turn pager

This book was heartbreaking in so many ways. And seeing how baker and Hannah got treated in high school, it’s was disgusting to say the least. But I couldn’t stop reading, turning page after page. There is eventually a love story, but it is hidden underneath hurt, pain, suffering, condemnation, denial, and malice.
A decent read, but I will probably never read it again. I know that people have to deal with the hate and scorn every day, but I’m a hopeless romantic, and I prefer the fairytale, with just a little but of turmoil.

3.0 out of 5 stars I have to be honest

I didn’t hate it... but, I also didn’t love it. Don’t get me wrong, I love the characters, and the plot in general. I just wasn’t happy with how easily Hannah rolled over to accept baker after what she put her through. As someone who struggled with their sexuality throughout high school I can relate to being afraid to come out and not being ready to love who you want openly. But Baker put Hannah through so much emotional trauma that it almost made me angry when they got together at the end. And that’s just my personal opinion. I also had just finished reading She Drives Me Crazy which I think is by far my new favorite LGBT enemies to lovers book so I made the mistake of comparing this to Scottie and Irene. For what it’s worth, it’s still a genuine coming of age (and out of the closet) story that can reach a wide audience. I just don’t think I was fully part of that audience

3.0 out of 5 stars Did Not Finish

In short: This book is a DNF for me. I stopped reading about 76% of the way through and never picked it up again. The first 15% of the book intrigued me enough to purchase the kindle edition, but I soon realized that the beginning did not reflect the overall quality of the novel.

In Detail: The two main characters of this novel feel flat to me. You could switch their positions and I believe, more or less, things would be the same. The tension at the end of the novel also falls flat; no doubt a result of the random side characters being deeply involved in it. There is no tension - no stakes. I shouldn't say there aren't stakes -rather, none that I cared about. We never meet the people that Baker would lose (ie. her family). It is implied that it would destroy her life but we are never showed what effect that would have on her, just told. Everything that is happening at the end of the novel feels utterly disconnected from the rest of the plot and I was disinterested in the characters at this point. To boil it down to one sentence: it is a stereotypical plot with flat characters and, while I can see it was written with passion, it's laughably unoriginal.

Harsh... but what is the point of a review if not to be honest?

That being said, I think the first 15% was very well done. The flat characters weren't evident as they were just being introduced and I found the plot quite intriguing. I'm sorry to say that this wasn't the case throughout.

A well written book about two best friends finishing their last year in a Catholic high school in Lousiana who happen to fall in love and destroy evveryone and everything around them. Or do they. I really enjoyed the story, characters and themes until around 80%, where Kelly Quindlen lost the plot I felt. And then she continued on well past the ending where it should have been. This could have been so much better, hopefully it will happen in a future book. 2012 in Lousiana at a Catholic school is not the most open and tolerant of places, and all the prejudices come out.

This book was ok, I would suggest it for high school kids or younger readers. Well, I'm 30 (not that old either) but the plot was nothing to be excited about.

Clumsy writing that was sometimes beautiful and sometimes awful. Heavy on the religious aspects of a budding lesbian relationship. Worth a read.
