This book is great with a lot of cases in how to manage the conflict in the group. I love metaphors in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for anyone trying to make things easier for others.
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on September 1, 2021
This is a thought provoking read for anyone who sees themselves as a “facilitator”. As Adam Kahane describes, this can be anyone trying to enhance the collaborative effort of any group. Kahane’s messages, learnings, and examples are so timely for a world that needs deep collaboration across diverse stakeholders more than ever before.

I’ve made much of my living as a facilitator, both in the formal role and as someone simply trying to make things easier for those around me. This book makes it clear why that work is so essential to effective collaboration and, hence, rewarding. Thank-you Adam Kahane!

5.0 out of 5 stars An important book, a must-read, if you want to help create change

I think I have read all Adam Kahanes books, and see this one as one more brick in the bridge he is building towards a unified understanding, or theory, of what facilitation really is. Why does what he and his Reos colleagues do work, and how can it be codified .This is truly a worthy but also daunting project
Adams writes in a way that makes his observations sound deceptively simple, almost easy to do, but when you slow down and really read what he says ,one realises the layers
In short, Kahane outlines five areas in which a move has to happen: In how we see the situation, how success is defined, how to get from here to there, how to decide who does what and how roles are understood; and the inner shifts that the facilitator has to to through to enable these moves

5.0 out of 5 stars More than Facilitation

Kahane explores how people like himself can produce the kind of change that enables one-time adversaries to work together and produce meaningful, lasting, and large scale social change. Anchored in systems and complexity science going all the way back at least to the ideas raised by Kurt Lewin in the 1940s, Facilitating Breakthrough provides dozens of ways in which we can combine top-down and grassroots based approaches to social change because neither approach on its own will work. Kahane comes up with lots of ways that can help people do that, including understanding the context in which people find themselves, committing ourselves to an extended period of time rather than expecting a “quick fix” to our problems, and more. In fact, Kahane suggests that that there are literally dozens of ways for us to get to the solutions we want as long as those of us who facilitate discussions among the people who disagree with each other are open-minded and flexible enough that we can help others see the world in new and creative ways.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transform your leadership
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 29, 2021

This book is written for leaders, period. It is required reading if you must help groups navigate crises, turning points, gridlock, or anything in between. A few concepts, in particular, transformed how I think about facilitation and leadership more broadly: the difference between horizontal and vertical facilitation, "unconditional positive regard," and the emphasis on experimentation and presence. This book will help remove boundaries to collaboration, which is a pressing problem in any organization today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful, inspiring and useful book on Transformative Facilitation
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 28, 2021

Adam Kahane provides a structured framework for Transformative Facilitation. He wisely combines true stories from the field -some old but many new- and insightful reflections on his practice as a facilitator of multi stakeholder collaborative processes in problematic situations in different countries. I found this book both inspiring and useful, because it provides a framework to name the moves and shifts that facilitators do while accompanying groups that face complex challenges.
