5.0 out of 5 starsInformative, without being preachy.

I took this book out of my local library and enjoyed it so much I purhased a copy. I've been putting my toe in the water of the vegan lifestyle for a couple of years now. I found the book informative, presenting good arguments to support vegan choices. The author isn't preaching, but instead encourages everyone to make changes to lean towards veganism. I'd recommend the book to anyone who is trying to eat ethically.

Maybe I was expecting more from this book, but I did not learn much and I was not impressed. However I have read a lot of books on similar issues so maybe it's suitable for a beginner trying to grab this way of living and eating

This is an excellent book for a newbie who is dabbling in Veganism. Very informative, thought provoking and enlightening! I would highly recommend this book as a "first read" if you are new to the Vegan way of life.

One of the few books I have read from cover to cover. Although I am not a 100% vegan, I do lean towards vegetarian with an occassional slip of eating chicken / turkey a few time a year, the overall message in this book is sound. I purchased this book (and other vegan cookery books) to see if I could understand where I was going wrong with my increasing weight and failing diets. Although I only had 10lb to lose I was getting nowhere despite trying to be 'good' for 3 months. I eventually chucked out all the so called low fat and slimming food products in my kitchen and switched to a vegan diet (I also cut out gluten and refined sugar) three weeks ago and have already lost 7lb without really trying too hard. Low fat products often contain extra sugar. I recommended this book to help you understand the issues surrounding highly processed food we eat on a day to day basis. I would recommend however that if dieting is the focus on buying the book, readers also buy a few 'basic' vegan cookbooks that cater for day to day inexpensive and sensible meals and also find yourself some good 'go to' veggie burger recepies that you can make and freeze. I had no intention whatsoever to rush out and buy seitan or tofu.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Carnivore Should Read This Book!

Like a lot of recent vegan converts, I decided to choose a plant based diet out of compassion for animals. I'd wavered back and forth because I was always very attracted to a vegan diet, but wasn't really up on the evidence and medical background, and quite frankly I was lazy. And then I clicked on videos clandestinely filmed in slaughterhouses and factory farms and became vegan from that day forward. No creature should ever have to suffer that kind of terror and abuse. As I started to get further into it and researched support for my choice, I came across this book and if I ever had any doubts about going back, this book would change my mind.

Ms. Freston has done amazing job of compiling factual information that supports what vegans have been telling us for years - that a plant based diet is better for the environment, better for animals, and better for our own health and well being. And it's put together in a way that makes it completely readable, understandable and backed with documented evidence from some serious experts. You don't need a Ph.D. to read and understand the information she gives you. She has compiled very convincing information from some medical experts the likes of T. Colin Campbell, Dr. John MacDougall, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn and many others. Look up their credentials and you'll be amazed at the medical minds with substantial evidence supporting a vegan diet. Being able to go to bed at night knowing nothing had to die to feed me today has now become the bonus feature of my new diet and lifestyle. Improving my health moving up to first place in the benefits of becoming vegan.

I'm buying a dozen-dozen hard copies of this book and passing it out for Christmas to every single person I know. I'm convinced it will change their lives. The evidence is overwhelming, and my friends are way to smart not to pay attention.

Thank you Ms. Freston for a great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Veganist" is simply beauty and perfection!

For someone, like Kathy Freston, who's mantra is "Progress, not perfection," she sure has come as close as I've ever seen in this book. I have been a long time fan of Kathy and her work and "Veganist" is her best work yet and my favorite book that I've read in a long time.

I judge books not only on if they strike a chord with me, but also if I think there are others, with or without the same viewpoint, who would enjoy reading them as well. I cannot think of a single person that I would not buy this book for or share it with. Vegans, vegetarians, and carnivores alike, will all gleen something out of this amazingly informative and non-judgemental book. Even Bono is quoted on the back cover, stating his meat-eating ways, and how Kathy opened his eyes to something new.

"Veganist" allows readers to make their own minds up about the information presented but does so in such a clear and friendly way. Freston talks about how we can heal our bodies, our planet, and any disease we may have simply by being aware of the world around us and what we put into our bodies. Even just one meal a week or substituting new foods that I had never heard of. It is an exciting new way to look at food and diet and the world and a GREAT way to start off a new year and a new you!

Being a southern gal myself, I relate to Kathy's past love of all things meat and cheese and will lean into this way of life, as she mentions.

Overall, a wonderful read and something I recommend to anyone, any age.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK. A MUST READ

Here is my take on this amazing book, I finished the book about two weeks ago. At that point I was weighing in at 203 pounds, and about 30 pounds overweight, but more importantly a believer of animal protein as an essential part of life. Since finishing the book I have gone vegan ( sorry Kathy I don't lean in to anything lol) and weigh 192 pounds today, thats 11 pounds in two weeks.

The best part was that I didn't have to change my life drastically, I took my everyday foods and just removed the animal based products and replaced them with plant based foods. And I don't have to starve myself, if the foods your eating are healthy, the foods you were meant to eat, then go ahead and stuff yourself, I dare you, it cant be done. I eat till I'm satisfied and continue to lose wait.

When it comes to disease, you know the ones that are killing us at alarming rates like diabetes, heart disease and cancer, you have choices. Feed the pharmaceutical companies, who if you believe are looking for cures, I have a bridge for sale - call me. Or two buy Kathy's book and realize that the foods you eat might just be the cure your looking for and its a lot cheaper.

Kathy has done an amazing job setting the book up as 10 promises, its an easy read with plenty of references that will make your transition easy or at minimum get you thinking in the right direction. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

I read a lot of vegan and other diet and health books, and am an Ironman triathlete in vigorous training so I care a lot about my health. When I finished reading this book today I was very appreciative of the approach Kathy took. The 10 promises are a great way to explain the benefits of being vegan to a mass audience, her writing style is very easy to read, and the facts are backed up by authoritative services. Lots of people go vegan because of animal rights, including the author; and I don't fall into that same camp. I do care a lot more about the water pollution and runoff from factory farms and the personal benefits like clear skin and potential weight loss.

There is one thing I would challenge. After about a month of being completely vegan most people look like they are about 10 years younger than they really are. I would argue that they look exactly like people their age are supposed to look, and we've become so standardized by a meat-eating society we think that the premature aging suffered by meat-heads is the new normal. In as little as a month or two you can look the way someone your age should look. And if that happens to appear 10 to 15 years younger than everyone else your age then that is their problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the benefits of going vegan

This book suggests "leaning" into veganism. It presents 10 "promises" and uses a chapter to describe each promise. The promises are: 1) lose weight; 2) lower risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes (or even reverse); 3) live longer and better; 4) take yourself out of harm's way; 5) save money; 6) reduce harm to the environment; 7) help the global poor; 8) reduce animal suffering; 9) be in line with wisdom from spiritual traditions; 10) personal and planetary evolution and growth. There are also chapters that discuss how to make the shift to become a vegan, answer questions, give meal plans and shopping lists, and list lots of resources for recipes, cookbooks, websites.

After reading this book, I decided to become a vegan, even though I had not even considered being a vegetarian before! The author says "it's progress, not perfection." So even if you do not fully become a vegan, even going part way will improve your health, and the health of the planet (not to mention the health of the animals). Even if you have no thoughts of being a vegetarian or a vegan, it's a good idea to be aware of information in this book that sheds light on how most of our food is produced and how it affects our health (or lack of health).

5.0 out of 5 stars I purchased this book to help my daughter remain on her health and wellness journey

I purchased this book for my daughter who is having fantastic success with the diet book. She has H-pylori in her digestive tract and has struggled for years for good digestive health. As a child she complained endlessly with stomach aches. As an adult she has struggled finding a diet that didnt aggrevate her symptoms. She has off and on had issues with her weight, often binging out of frustration because of what felt to her like starvation pains. This made her situation worse and often she gained a lot of unwelcomed weight resulting in low self esteem. She found the cleanse book and has been extremely happy with the results in every aspect. Most of all she has been able to stay with the life style changes because of the philosophy of the author. Ease is the word my daughter uses describing the books by this author. I purchased the series of wellness books for her and she is doing remarkably well. She loves the books and...she reads them! Well worth the investment when I see how healthy and happy she has become.
