I found the story interesting somewhat repetitive of classics but kept me reading. However the first chapter I found very Erie and too much for the
Minimum age recommendation. Chapter 2 clears everything up but still a child reading
the first chapter may have nightmares.

2.0 out of 5 stars So boring....

Condition of this book was excellent.
Story is good but poor narration makes it an extremely boring read. How much I tried to like this book since everybody raves about it & it's also a Newberry winner, but just couldn't.

Yeeeah.:/ I would give the book 2 1/2 since the writing was great for a kid's book, but since that score doesn't exist, I'll settle with 2. What first grabbed my attention was the cover - yes, I know, don't judge a book by its cover, but a lot of times they're appealing. What really hooked me was the summary, so, of course, I had to buy it (especially since it was going to be a present for my little sister). There's so much, yet so little to say about this book.
SPOILER ALERT!!!
For starters, the summary gave you an idea of chapters filled with magic and adventure and maybe some action - it wasn't any of those three! Due to Xan putting a spell on Luna that sealed her magic, we really couldn't delve into the knowledge of magic. The author gives an artistic and even sciencey portrait of magic, but you really don't know all its potential or even its limitations. And another thing that confuses me (and I hope someone will answer this) is can people be born with magic - the book implies not, unless the individual was "enmagiked." However, Luna's crazy mom suddenly developed magic in the story. I'm thinking maybe it was triggered and developed over the years since they mentioned that Sister Ignatia got her magic from her sorrow. Who knows. Like I said, the author doesn't go into details on how magic works.
Secondly, were the characters. Luna as a little girl was crazy like her mom. She was a pain in the butt, even when she got older. And I'm sorry to say this, but because of her, dear granny died. The dragon Fyrian was annoying. That word alone describes him. Glerk, the bog monster, I didn't realize how special his character was - but, even then, he still wasn't that important. He was just there for emotional support. Xan, eh, she was a witch with memory loss that she inflicted on herself, so she wouldn't have to deal with sorrow due to a traumatic experience. But I think it was also because of Sister Ignatia, a witch who fed on sorrow. Now she was a surprise villain I didn't suspect her the least bit - that was a great twist. Antain was a character I expected a lot from since the author dedicated so many chapters to him. In the end, he turned out to be useless. It was his wife who really did the most.
Finally, it was 90% of the time boring. The first half of the book had little to nothing happened. It's not until after like 200 pages that things started picking up. And even when the volcano exploded I thought there was going to be action. Fyrian suddenly grew into a giant dragon and Luna exploded with infinite magic. I thought the two would join together to stop the volcano, like the previous wizard and dragon did, except they wouldn't die. Nope. She just summoned bubbles to protect the people. Like really? She had the power of basically creation. She can make anything. She can DO anything. But she made bubbles. [sigh]
All in all, this book was a disappointment. At least it was for me. Anyone else can disagree I'm just voicing an opinion.

A someone who was told this book was an interesting book and has heard nothing but great reviews, I was not impressed. Starting off I never really enjoyed fantasy books in general, so going in to this book it wasnโ€™t on my side of being a book that I would sit down and guarantee have a fun reading experience. To me, I thought this book was kind of wholesome and had great written parts too it, and was very well written and did have a good plot. Witches in the woods and adopting babies is definitely a topic you donโ€™t see on the everyday occasion. I believe that this book is an awesome book to many people it just happened to not meet my requirements in a book but definitely do in most as it seems. Iโ€™m well understood of why the author got the award. I want all of you to understand that this book is a long book with plenty of crazy moments and wild stuff in this book. Sit down and be ready to read a long one!

2.0 out of 5 stars Sadly, Not What Expected

I was excited to read this novel, sadly I was disappointed. The characters were not memorable, I only remember one, Xon. In the beginnings of the book, there were several humorous parts, which made me looking forward to the rest of the story. I do not usually read other reviews before finishing a book, but I was curious if other readers felt the same. Most readers gave the book four stars or more; however, there were a handful that agreed with my conclusion. I'm not saying that the writing was bad, there were great moment, but they needed to be strung together to make a plot. I still do not know what the plot was, I needed to go back to the summery several times to follow the story. Maybe if I listened to the audio book would make the story easier to follow.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Struggle for Me to Read

I really wanted to like this book. I love fantasy and I love good YA fiction. I loved the cover art. Given that, I looked forward to reading it. Even after reading 1/4 of it, I just couldn't get into it and, at times, found myself aggravated by it. I truly saw no comparison to the Harry Potter books, Peter Pan or The Wizard if Oz. My apologies to the author, but it just seemed like she was trying too hard...even the characters names...all of them just too "unique"...did not seem to flow when read together within the story. I was unable to connect to the characters. Perhaps if I had stayed the course and read further into the book I would have begun to like it, but since I didnt look forward to reading it, I stopped.

The book is written in fragments and moves very slowly, also for a children's book it is way to philosophical.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too mature for a 8-10 year old

This book came with a series I picked out for my eight-year-old from Disney. It was an added bonus so I thought that it would be a great read and a thicker chapter book for her. After reading about human sacrifices and then taking a baby from a crying mother and sacrificing it being taken by animals I am really pissed off that I actually bought this book. I would never have my eight-year-old daughter read this maybe 14+. This is not a book for an 8 year old at all. It should not be added on to a Disney series. I read the first paragraph and decided a big no.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nah!
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on February 2, 2017

I thought The Girl Who Drank the Moon was too verbose, too ethereal, too repetitive, and, finally, not that interesting, hopeful, or thoughtful. I'm not sure who this is aimed at. A story of witches, a dragon, a little evil, some good, a poem or two (which really aren't that thoughtful) and, as one review above states, everything is "solved" in the last few pages of the book. When I got to the almost-ending, I put the book down and forgot that it hadn't ended. I had no gripping desire to read the last chapters. I got to page 350ish and then I had to make myself continue. I find nothing redeeming at all in this book, and I'm sorry. It had such wonderful reviews that I thought it would be a good summer read-aloud for my grandchildren. It's not Wonder, the standard we all use.

When I saw the definitions of the stars here, I went from 3 stars to 2. Within the first few pages I instantly saw "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. Initially I found the characters uninteresting and felt little connection with them. By the end, I found the characters uninteresting and felt little connection with them! I must admit I struggled to finish this book simply because it was a Newberry winner. I disagree with reviewers who said they couldn't put it down. It was hard to pick up! I think this choice for American children's literature's highest honor is misplaced and is better served shredding itself into paper birds and flying into the woods, or bog or volcano or wherever. The book that should have won the award is an honor book, The Inquisitor's Tale. I'll try to review that one as well.
