I found the story interesting somewhat repetitive of classics but kept me reading. However the first chapter I found very Erie and too much for the
Minimum age recommendation. Chapter 2 clears everything up but still a child reading
the first chapter may have nightmares.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Words!

The Girl Who Drank the Moon is a beautifully written, whimsical fairytale that has a lovely moral interwoven into the magic of the story.

Though the writing is lyrical and wonderful, I thought there were parts of the book with unnecessary plotting that did nothing to move the story forward or shape the characters in any meaningful way. The premises of the story is delightful and satisfying. I recommend this book to readers who believe in fantastical, magical worlds. 4.5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than I first thought

I didn't like the story at the first glance. Witch and monster are good, humans are bad and ridiculous. I personally think this is pretty much cliche. But as the story unfold, things turned out to be much more complicated than that.
It's an interesting story, slow-paced, but overall a good one. The magic is purely magical, which I love. I reduce one star for the characters. Most of their arcs are fair enough, actually, and almost every named characters are well rounded. But I somehow feel that they could have been better. I can't relate to them. It is, I think, because of the way they are portrayed. Something is missing.
Anyway, I would recommend this book. It's a good read.

For the first 10% of The Girl Who Drank the Moon I was quite sure it was going to be a 5 star book, but somewhere after that the effortless beauty started to feel a little more forced. I suspect that some more aggressive editing is all the book would have needed to be flawless.

Nonetheless, it's a beautiful book and I couldn't help but pick it up again and again until I was finished.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magic and Whimsy
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on February 3, 2021
To appease the evil witch living in he woods the people of the Protectorate leave their youngest baby as an offering. But the witch is not what people think. She’s kind so rescues the children and takes them to a new home on the other side of the forest. Along the way she feeds them from the stars in the night sky. One year she accidentally feeds a baby moonlight which fills the child with magic. The witch decides she must raise this child herself. She appropriately names her Luna.

Considering I keep saying I don’t read fantasy novels I sure have been reading quite a few of them lately. Maybe I’ve been “enmagicked” too? How could this book not be charming when it’s populated by an extraordinarily small dragon, an equally extraordinarily giant swamp monster, a good witch who isn’t and an evil which who, well … isn’t, a hero and a sweet love story.

Even though it clocks in at just under 400 hundred pages, its definitely a YA read. I enjoyed this book and would give it a strong 4 stars. Even so, I don’t think I’m ready to make the jump to “grown-up” fantasy literature just yet.

4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD WITCH
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on October 29, 2016
This is the story of a little baby girl sent to die but who is adopted by a good witch instead. Without meaning to, the Witch pours magic into Luna but, instead of letting her draw from her magic, she bounds it until Luna’s thirteenth birthday.

Incidentally, that is the day the Witch decides to let herself die. But that day is coming and coming, closer and closer, and the Witch starts to regret her decision.

There obviously is more happening in the story than only that. In fact, we have points of view specific to a variety of characters and even two dragons! But summarizing would take too much space, when what I really want to do is praise this book for its magnificent content.

Oh, what a magical writing style. It’s so lyrical, so memorable, so sense-awakening. Definitely suited for a middle grade novel, while being interesting and original enough to hold even an adult’s attention or someone who is not entirely into books for kids. We need voices in literature that have their own different style, and Kelly Barnhill is a refreshing one.

There is a lovely fairytale-esque atmosphere in the story that made me want to read this aloud to children in my community. Any book that provokes this reaction is worth a good hand of applause! This book also made me feel astoundingly empathic to the Witch, whom is such a caring, misjudged creature. Oh, oh, I must not forget to mention that the little dragon Fyrian is exactly like… Well, you remember Mulan’s quirky, hilarious dragon companion? Yeah, that’s Fyrian alright.

In a perfect world, every kid would have read this enchanting story.
