Great for advanced readers in lower grades

Overall the book was really well done. My daughter in kindergarten has read most of it. The passages cover a variety of topics in a range of styles. Most of the passages are really quite engaging, for my daughter at least. The variations in questions are also a refreshing change from some other reading comprehension books.

I just had 2 small issues with this book. The first is that there are occasional factual inaccuracies, especially in what might be called the “scientific” passages. This could have been avoided by obtaining the help of a scientifically literate reviewer. I would urge the author to avail herself of this opportunity in any future revisions.

The second issue is that in a handful of passages the author definitely promotes certain values that may be antithetical to what a child’s parents believe. For example 104 promotes the idea that kids should not have homework, while 107 suggests that there is too much testing in schools.

In other passages in the book, the thrust of the text is explicitly pointed out as the “author’s idea” - for example by having questions like “do you agree with the author’s point of view?”. But for the passages I mentioned, as well as a few others, this is not the case.
