5.0 out of 5 stars my six year old finished half the book already

My six year old is feeling unchallenged at her school, and as a way to extend her, i purchased this book. She LOVES it! She loves learning, and she spent everyday on it for about a week and already completed half the book - she won't have any left for summer break. The actiities/questions and reading stimulus are perfect for a 6/7 year old and she was able to do most on her own too.

My 3 Cents
5.0 out of 5 stars Contains fun activities that can be used to teach kids younger than first grade!
Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2021
My son is currently on Kindergarten curriculum and I am always so excited to order any workbooks to help him advance his skills. Although this is a grade 1 book for writing skills, and it expects the child to be a full-fledged reader and writer, my 4.5 year old son actually learned a lot by going through this book with me reading the questions aloud and him answering rather than writing out the responses. What’s more, he LOVED this book. Last night we went through 41 pages of it straight - he didn’t want to put it down!

The book advances in difficulty as It progresses along, and I expect that we won’t get the whole way through it because I peeked ahead and some things he just isn’t ready for. But I taught him the concept of when to capitalize letters yesterday and he was a pro by the third question on the first page that had this content. He also had never been exposed to punctuation marks but he knows the difference between a question and a statement so it was easy for him to learn to put a ?, !, or . at the end of a sentence. He loves the exercises where he picks out the thing that doesn’t belong. Another favorite of his were going through mazes by picking out the right nouns (e.g. follow the path that shows types of people, or adjectives that describe something you can feel). This book has some pages designed for learning new vocabulary, so we had fun with that too. He is still remembering tonight about the girl being “glum” about dropping her ice cream cone on the ground and says he’d be sad too.

My son isn’t ready to be given a prompt and write two sentences on it, BUT he is ready to use his imagination and narrate the sentences to me. There are some concepts he hasn’t mastered yet, such as a page on when to use “an” versus “a”. We’re not ready for spelling complex words so there are some “correct this word” or “fill out the crossword with the word that matches the picture” or “word scramble” type of things, but there was amazingly so much we can do!

On the bottom of each page is a descriptor of the type of activity targeted. If you feel your child needs help in a particular topic, there is an index which shows which topics are on which pages. This book follows the Common Core and has a page at the end which shows which activities link up to which common core values. Finally, there is an answer key.

There is no way to tear out pages and this isn’t spiral bound but the front cover does have a way to crease it so it stays open.

Overall, I can’t believe how excited my son is about this book. He asked to do a few more pages today. He loves learning new things and the positive reinforcement he gets when he is right. The colorful illustrations and variety of actives help catch his attention. We are doing everything orally right now, so we will have it to use again in about a year when he is writing on his own. This is highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars My 6 year old loves it

We're homeschoolers and my youngest likes colorful worksheets. I'm always looking for something to supplement my 6 year old's schoolwork to give him something extra to do while I work with one of his older siblings. He likes these worksheets, and these are cute.

These start off basic - learning things like capital letters, and punctuation. And slowly it gets a little more in depth.

The book does not really teach - but it would be very easy for a parent to answer questions a child might have as they work through this. It covers topics like writing basic sentences (capital letter and punctuation), spelling, writing your own sentences (with starter phrases given), categorizing items, learning names of months, comparison words, etc. And it covers grammar terms such as adjective, plural works, and conjunctions.

The majority of the activities are handwriting based but there are a few color the word type activities.

Having taught my 4 kids (ages 6-12), I believe this is ideal for a first grader. Depending on the child, it's probably most ideal the summer between K and 1st grade. Although it would be a good book to fill time, and practice handwriting for a child in 1st grade.

I wish it was spiral bound so it would lay flat. But the pages are good quality and as long as the child doesn't write with a marker, writing doesn't bleed through the other side.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended for building core writing skills
Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2021
I'm using this book with my soon-to-be 5 year old preschooler. I've been through so many of the usual basic writing books for her age so this was a refreshing set of activities to bring her to the next level beyond the alphabet and learning to write properly. For younger children, the content requires adult guidance, but it's a great way to complement and supplement writing lessons. The projects start easy and progress as they go, but you can skip around if you're targeting specific skills. The methods they use to teach the skills are repeated, but in a good way. Nothing feels redundant. I like that the book doesn't just assume you've mastered a topic after encountering it once. It continues to build on it.

Here are some of the skills covered:
- Capitalization and punctuation in sentences
- Nouns / Adjectives / Verbs / Pronouns
- Writing sentences, responding to prompts, writing opinions
- Spelling
- Singular vs Plural
- Phonics
- vocabulary

Here's how they teach the skills:
- crossword puzzles with word banks
- complete a sentence / fill in the blanks
- unscrambling sentences / unscrambling words
- mazes
- illustrating and writing prompts
- circling answers
- fixing sentences
- filling in the blanks.
- categorizing words

My list above doesn't really do justice for the options in the book. At the very back there's a skills index that groups the topics together so you can focus on just one skills set. It also has Common Core Correlations if you're looking for that too.

The design of the book is well done. The text is legible and easy to follow (not too busy on the page). Illustrations are colorful and easy to understand. The area to write is a good size (handwriting lines are the perfect height in my opinion).

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Feels like fun, not work
Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2021
This activity book is engaging and fun for kids. It doesn't feel too much like work, especially if you have them do it in small batches. There are crossword puzzles, fill in the blanks, multiple meanings, sentence structure, capitalization, definitions, mazes, and more. The lines are large enough to accommodate kids' larger handwriting.

I appreciate that the children are diverse. Even when names are used, the author took care to include names from a variety of backgrounds.

This is good to reinforce concepts at home, or even to use if you are homeschooling. This is a great quiet time activity as well.
