Personally, these stories struck me. It crosses genres. This is a wonderful book. I would have loved to have read more of Izumi Suzuki’s writing. I understand that this was her first book. Capturing the lostness or mental confusion or apathy of our lives driven by an innate need for more without being able to understand what the “more” is. You can sense at times the lostness of trying to understand our humanness as compared to what society may expect it should be for the individual (the you). Very compelling but simple prose. The translators appear to have done an excellent job.

I really wanted to like this collection

I love the story of this author and I really wanted to like the collection. It looks so cool! And that name? Love it.

That being said, I found the first story confusing and then they only moderately got better as I kept reading. Then, when they finished, I was glad they were over and I could move on to something else.

I am not a native Japanese speaker and wonder if they would be better in their original language.

I am a fan of Japanese writers - when their is a quality translator attached. I enjoyed this book, but did not find the writing as wild or out there as the reviews and blurbs claimed.

It might not be the book for everyone, and I can see some people being disappointed.

For me it delivered.

The best sci-fi, IMHO, is social fiction. Ms. Suzuki imagines detailed dystopias but is mainly concerned with the human beings living in those worlds. I hope they translate more of her work.
