4.0 out of 5 starsSimple. Colourful. Great starting point.
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on July 15, 2021
We gave this book a try with my 2.5 year old at first. It seemed too early then. We tried it again after her 3rd birthday, doing 2 units per week. (Each unit is 2 pages long.) Now we have surpassed 40 units. Once she has started to blend some simple words, she seemed intrinsically more motivated, and we can do 3-4 activities per week if we don't have other outdoor activities to take over that time.

Units on individual consonants are helpful. I like how there is a fun action to associate with a new sound, such as chomping your arms like an alligator to memorize the sound [a] [a] [alligator]. But the activities where the child needs to circle around or draw lines to connect certain pictures or sounds sometimes seemed very time-consuming at first, especially when a young child's grip on a pencil and fine motor skills are not yet well developed. That got better over time however.

Regarding vowels, I didn't feel that the book offers adequate material or practice, at least in the first parts that we have already gone through ourselves. We took a pause and provided my child with additional drills and practiced the short vowel sounds during meal times or through games outside of this book to strengthen her grasp. We then resumed when she has become more familiar.

I like the units for blending already known sounds. The presentation style with the big dots under individual vowels and consonants of each word along with the large colourful font is visually helpful.

I find the units on sight words, where a mixture of words and pictures is used to present sentences, to be very confusing. So I have been skipping over those units. I also generally don't like an picture above a letter as a hint to the child.

Overall, I think this book is resourceful. One doesn't need to follow every exercise to the tee. The book offers an easy starting point for parents and very young children to work on phonics. I like that it's easy to use. You can pick up where you left off with little to literally no preparation. The colourful pages help capture a child's short attention span. I looked into other more elaborate phonics teaching guides but came back to this one, at least for now, because it is simple enough for my child's age (3 years old) and easy enough to fit into our busy schedule.

5.0 out of 5 stars MUST to Teach your Child to Read

We started this in Feb for my 3 year old as part of our pre-k learning at home. She turns 4 in April. We did it slowly as she is very young (great for preschol age if they are ready or just start at Kindergarten). So we dont do it daily. It tells you what to say to teach it to your kid (you read it to them cuz they cant read). I was worried even getting this book if I'll know how to teach it to my kiddo but this tells you how. Each lesson 2 pages so you open the lesson and its the left page and the right page. Not a lot of practice activities so I would supplement with letter tracing/practice workbooks/worksheets. Each lesson makes you review previous lesson first. I think 5 lessons in they have a review of all the alphabets learned already. And lesson 10 is when you start to sound out 3 letter words. Letters aren't learned in order of ABC but in a way that kids can start to put letters together to sound words. Definitely will recommend it as its colorful, short lessons, has the "teacher's guide" built in, activities where kids actually "mark" on the book (its not solely a manual for adults). Unlike a similar/popular how to read book that doesn't seem to have color and looks like a complex teacher's manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book to help little kids read!

This is by far the best book I've found and used to get my 3.5 year old to read. I started with 1 lesson a day, and whilst it took some time having a 3.5 year old listen and sit still for even one lesson, I eventually got to 2 lessons and now he looks forward to doing his lessons everyday! I now have a 3.5 year old who can read and this book made it happen! I just wish the author could make another book to build on this knowledge for kids to keep learning! Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars By far the best intro to reading that I've found

This book was a breath of fresh air after many purchases for beginner reading books. There are clear step-by-step instructions for the "teacher" on each page which are helpful. The books begins with simple exercises to first familiarize children with letters, followed by sounds of 'blended letters'. There are some exercises that involve colouring or drawing and I admit that I did not do those because they didn't feel practical in the moments when we were learning. Rather, I adapted those exercises so they involved pointing or counting, and they worked just as well. I also use this book as a companion book to simple story books so I can turn to it and help my child remember words learned in a different context. My only disappointment was that the book wasn't longer with more blended sound combinations and practice exercises. However, it is a pretty long book already. It may be better broken up and/or expanded into a series of three or four books. My child really enjoys the pictures as they help contextualize things.

Simple activities encouraging and reinforcing letter sounds, haven't finished the book yet but anticipate this being a very useful tool in beginning reading. Pages have instructions for parents to support the learning from the activity presented on each page. Colorful and fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction for those ready to start reading

My 3yo son and I have really enjoyed working through this book. The activities have been fun for him, and he has gone from ready to read to a beginner reader. We tried to do a little each day, and generally got through 1-3 pages, depending on his focus on that day. He is extremely proud of his progress and has started to read some very easy books. I looked through a few learn to read books, and this was by far the best for the level he was at. My only issue is that a few of the pictures were a little abstract for a 3yo, but it wasn't a frequent issue and doesn't take away from my love of this book! I wish there was a level 2 because I am having a hard time finding something suitable for our next steps!
