Unpredictable as always! A tad far-fetched with the Professor Felk character and probably time to move towards more realistic cases and villains. Can't wait for the next novel to see how things turn out, as the book is a two-parter. This should probably be stated in the description/summary, although for me, having read the series from the beginning, the only inconvenience is the wait......

4.0 out of 5 stars Matthew Corbett continues his Adventures
Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on December 14, 2022

In my opinion, this book is the best in the Matthew Corbett Series. I've enjoyed all of the series so far. And in each book Matthew Corbett becomes more of an investigator, He is already a smart and very inquisitive and intuitive man, which started at a very young age when he was orphaned and taken under the wing of the "Father" that ran the orphanage. And barely escapes the orphanage after it is taken over by a vile and horrible man. Matthew is more or less adopted by a lawyer looking for a "boy" with the desire to become his clerk. Matthew fits that bill.
In each book, in this series, Matthew Corbett hones his skills, as he tracks information, and becomes a better investigator. His skills of seeing a problem sharpen with each adventure. By luck and skill, he finds a way to solve both small and large problems and adds skills that an orphan would never imagine being able to do and accomplish.
In "Freedom of the Mask" Matthew travels to England, not by choice but as a gift to Professor Fell, the arch-enemy. His dearest friends Barry and Hudson follow the ship Matthew has been taken onto to travel to England. From there the adventure begins.
Much of the wording that Robert McCammon uses reminds me of old Sherolk Homes mysteries. precisely what Robert McCammon does with the chart Corbett. He "is" the equivalent of Sherlock Homes in the 18th Century.
I hope the future readers enjoy this book series as much as I have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fodor's London 1703 - Places to avoid

Worst tour of London ever. Never going back, thanks Fodor! Kidding aside, this was a good continuation of the story both personally and professionally for Corbett. Assuming you like routing for the underdog, this one was particularly gloomy and disheartening from start to finish. If you like routing for Professor Fell, well done - all will suffer. Bit of a cliff hanger, but am planning to move on to Cardinal Black and keep the ball rolling.

I've been reading Robert McCammon since the release of Swan Song in the mid-80s. I read everything that he wrote, digging into the not-very-good back catalog works, and eagerly read every new release. And then, out of the blue, he stopped writing and completely disappeared. When I saw that he was returning to writing with a new book (Speaks the Nightbird) after more than decade away, I was excited and pre-ordered sight unseen with no idea what it would be about. I've been pre-ordering the Matthew Corbett novels ever since.

Mild spoilers for the set-up.

Freedom of the Mask continues the tale of Matthew Corbett. It's a significant improvement on the previous novel (The River of Souls) which felt short and incomplete. Freedom picks up some time after River left off. Matthew has been left addled after the events of River and is captured by Count Dahlgren. He's being transported to England for delivery to Fell, and a most certain doom. Greathouse and Berry team up and ride off to the rescue. Somewhat into the trip to England, Matthew recovers his memory, and the roller coaster takes the first of the many twists to come. Matthew makes his way to England, with Greathouse and Berry not far behind, and everything kicks into high gear. Fell has a competitor, Matthew makes new friends, people are rescued, people are murdered, mysteries are solved, and new plots and puzzles are uncovered.

If you're a fan of the series and were on the fence about continuing on after the last book, you owe it to yourself to give Freedom of the Mask a shot. A return to form and an injection of new ideas that promise several new books to come.
