3.0 out of 5 starsDense Informative and Illustrating. DevOps with deep analysis
Reviewed in Canada ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ on July 20, 2019
An impressive achievement, this book distills years of hard work and analysis following growing trends in our industry. The book clearly shows the capabilities which push high performers to achieve greatness.

With the amount of data and findings they present I am not sure if you could make them more exciting. The authors are too notch, but due to the density of the material it can be a bit dry. There are entire chapters outlining the rigorous methods used. While intellectually interesting, they were harder to get through. The content is fantastic and so don't let this stop you from picking up this book.

If you want hard data to back up best practices or to help your team become stronger then this book is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, helped me organize my thoughts

I enjoyed reading this book. There was nothing completely new, but it organized it all in a logical framework that helped me.
I took many notes and to-do's.
The book offers surveys as the main tool to measure current state and progress. Even though the logic for that is explained in chapter 13 and 14, I expected other more objective KPI's.

If you are currently working at Netflix, Google, or Amazon in product engineering this book might not provide much insight. But for the rest of us this book shows in a scientific way the steps organization need to take to accelerate their digital output and gain the capability to stay relevant in the new digital economy.

A clear, concise, and methodical look at what differentiates high performance from low performance. If you have opinions about what impacts these attributes, then be prepared examine the data that will reinforce or burst those opinions.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not many hard statistics here.

Sorry Jez. I read every single book you are involved with. However I must say I am disappointed. I really am looking for some hard evidence to support the claims made in Puppet's Annual Reports, but this book just seems to offer more claims. Where are the hard numbers that prove trunk based development reduces risk?

I see claim after claim, but very little data to actually support your argument.

I am rooting for you and your work. Don't get me wrong, I think TBD is the right way to go. I just haven't seen any statistical evidence to support that. I am hoping to see more research on this topic soon.

Please keep up the great work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for IT people an anyone interacting with them

Every IT manager and every software developer/engineer with the smallest responsibility should read this book. It's short and critical, and you can ignore half of it since it's just on the research methodology - as an ignorant in the matter, I trust they did a good job. It still is the first of its kind to reach this popularity, which means not all of its findings might be valid and will remain valid, but hopefully more studies like this will come out in the future. And this just makes it even more important in my opinion.

Even people needing the services of IT people should read it, in order to be able to tell a good IT company from a bad one. The book tells you the credentials you should look for.

Some good thoughts shared. Overall a good book worth recommending. Though I thought the text explaining why data is valid was unnecessary
