I was lucky enough to get to pre-read this amazing book. Shelley Burgess and Beth Houf take PIRATE leadership to new depths in Lead Like a PIRATE. This book shows that courageous leaders can build the types of schools where adults are excited to work and kids are excited come to school. Beth and Shelley have taken their experiences in educational leadership and drawn a treasure map toward success for those of us who aspire to be great. This book will take you out of your comfort zone and push you toward greatness. The challenges, which are included throughout the book, will push you to become a better leader. Like the other PIRATE books before it (Teach Like A Pirate, Learn Like A Pirate, Play Like A Pirate, and Explore Like A Pirate,) I will continually go back to Lead Like a PIRATE when I need inspiration, motivation, and ideas that will make my school better. I plan on sharing this with my colleagues because everyone should "Lead Like A Pirate."
This is the perfect book study for school administrators! We loved "Teach Like A Pirate" so I was excited to read this when it was first released. I underlined and highlighted something on almost every page because it's that rich. The bottom line (and the greatest takeaway) from this book is "Culture first, culture next, culture always" and I believe that 100%. The climate and culture of a school will trump the academics, the facilities, etc every time. This book had some easy, practical ways to create and sustain the culture of excellence that you want on any school campus.
This book is amazing and a must read for all educational leaders. One of my favorite things about this book is that it gives practical examples that you can try right away. I bought the kindle version so it was great to just click on the links and be taken to specific pages/sites with actual examples. This did it for me. To many books are filled with great theories and not enough "how to". I am and educator and I am in the business of how to. I have a twitter account because of this book and though I am just figuring things out, its exciting to connect with other leaders on the same mission as I am. I am planning to share this with the other leaders in my school and have a book study group. I love the stories shared by Beth and Shelley, it makes it all seems attainable and not some far fetched concept that only people with super special abilities can achieve. Have fun being inspired and challenged to Lead like a PIRATE!
It isn't often that an educational book is easy to read, relevant, realistic, and impactful! This book has already changed my practice for the better. Not only does it have a fun and smooth format to follow, it has a bunch of resources and step by step ways to change how we lead schools for better student and staff performance. It doesn't matter if you are a counselor, teacher, custodian, teacher's aide, or administrator, this book will beat to your drum and get you ready to re-chart your course. Do yourself a favor and buy one now, better yet, buy a few and pass them along to colleagues. Also, follow the movement on Twitter at #leadLAP. "Culture first, Culture next, and Culture always". C'mon matey walk the plank with us, I promise, you will be a swimmer in no time!
