3.0 out of 5 stars Expected bias, but they also throw some shade at Biden, Harris, and even Barack Obama

The view taken on President Trump is 100℅ biased. There are statements like this one here. "Trump was still fixated on the unrest in Democratic cities, impatient to bring down the fist of the federal enforcement agencies in blue America. On September 4, he called his old adversary Kate Brown, the governor of Oregon, to push her to carry out her own crackdown on lawlessness in Portland." The reason he was fixated on the blue state unrest is there was constant rioting in 2020 and blue state "leadership" refused to do anything about it. "Trump’s attack on absentee and mail-in balloting was no surprise. His longstanding opposition to pandemic-driven changes to election procedure, aimed at making it easier for people to avoid voting in person, had hardened and grown increasingly paranoid over the summer." This book, like most every other Democrat, refuses to acknowledge that there was anything untoward about the 2020 election results, the mail-in voting procedures, vote counting, vote drops off boxes, or any of the behavior of state election officials. This book proclaims "no evidence" despite the evidence that has been unearthed since 2020. Voting box surveillance, a Wisconsin special counsel, and indictments in multiple states. Just to name a few.
Here is one of the most ridiculous quotes about the outcome of the 2020 election. "Americans have long taken to the streets to celebrate presidential election results, yet what took place on Saturday, November 7, went beyond the festivities of a normal election year. The cheering and chanting, the joyous honking of car horns and spontaneous dancing in the streets, the mixture of elation and relief—it was the kind of giddy scene Americans had previously seen in foreign countries after the ouster of a dictator." However, the book does take shots at Biden. It's literally impossible not to. "The enthusiasm in the diverse crowd seemed to have little to do with Joe Biden. They were jubilant about Trump’s defeat, and in some cases about Biden’s history-making running mate, Kamala Harris."

You can imagine the complete and utter bias they show when they get to 1/6. They make absolutely no effort to report anything except the narrative that has been vomited from every legacy media outlet since the moment it happened. What's Interesting is the alleged conversations they reveal between Republicans that publicly supported Trump. Some of which have audio that's been in the news lately. It's no surprise that Benedict McConnell is part of these private knife-in-back conversations. But it was a surprise to see, and hear Kevin McCarthy.

The book goes on to bash Trump further, but it also sheds some light on VP Harris and her staffing problems. There have been 13 people that have quit and a lot of them were willing to talk. The book reveals how FLOTUS feels about VP Harris. How Biden and Harris feel about each other. And even what Obama really thinks of Joe Biden. If you're Center to right, you are probably going to cringe through some, or maybe a lot of it. But it's worth getting through it. The veneer of the Biden administration starts to crack after the book can't focus on Trump anymore.

3.0 out of 5 stars LIBERAL BIAS
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 21, 2022

This book shows how the NYT has become a liberal propaganda machine. It was written by two NYT reporters and is basically an on-and-off tirade against Trump. Nevertheless it is worth reading as most of it is a good chronological summary of the pandemic, presidential election, and Biden's first year. And it has a clear writing style which is easy to read.

It claims Trump had "no plan" to combat the pandemic which is beyond ridiculous. The only real solution was a vaccine and Trump fast-tracked the vaccine which was developed before the end of 2020. He also took a production approach in expediting the manufacture of medical equipment like ventilators. He sent two Navy hospital ships to NY and CA but the local officials refused to use them so Trump would not get any credit for them. It should be noted that COVID deaths under Biden are now double those under Trump.

The book attacks Trump's "baseless belief" that the 2020 election was rigged. The Democrats tried to reverse the 2016 election of Trump for four years and now we are supposed to believe they wouldn't cross the line of rigging the election? They managed to ban voter IDs and used the pandemic to eliminate mail-in ballot verification almost everywhere. The only motive for this would be to allow non-citizens and other ineligibles to vote. This creates an inherently rigged election. In addition Democrat-run courts in swing states with Republican state legislatures struck down election integrity laws when the Constitution clearly states that state legislatures are to control voting laws.

All of this gave Pence ample evidence to refuse to certify the claimed votes. But Pence is a guy whose main goal is to protect the system as it is and not challenge it like Trump. All that was left was the normal audits which can mostly check if someone voted twice. There was no auditing of the registration process which is where most of the fraud occurs.

The book admits Biden has a "stalled agenda" after initially getting his American Rescue Plan passed but not the follow-up Build Back Better plan. The situation for Biden is much worse in 2022 than it was at the end of 2021 when his disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan and a resurgence of COVID were the main issues. He is now faced with inflation (which was largely caused by his American Rescue Plan), record gas prices, a looming recession, an ongoing crime wave, and Putin's invasion of Ukraine after it was apparent that Biden was too weak to stop it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, if you are not triggered by the obvious bias

This book had quite a bit of prerelease press as certain stories and findings from it were shared. It sounded interesting so I decided to buy a copy. I am a conservative, but not bothered by ideas that challenge my own; I knew it was from 2 New York Times reporters.

The book definitely wears it biases on its sleeves, and that’s OK. I expect the same thing from conservative authors as well. There is lots of interest here to people all along the ideological spectrum. It’s well-sourced and often times info passed directly to the authors. I thought it was a good read.

However, I did take issue with a couple of parts that were factually incorrect- being biased is one thing, being wrong is another.

In the part describing the procedure in the event of an Electoral College tie, the authors correctly indicate that the House of Representatives would break the tie; each state’s delegation gets one vote. But they wrote “If something went wrong with the Electoral College count, then a Republican *heist* in the House was a real possibility” (my emphasis added). The stated procedure in the event of an EC tie is a procedure defined in the constitution (as noted by the authors)- it is not a “heist”. Again, bias is one thing, but falsely labeling that scenario as a heist is factually incorrect.

The other error was in describing the physical mess in the Capitol after the January 6th riot. The authors write “…signature books for some of the police officers that had been killed or had taken their own lives”. There were no police officers killed on January 6th. One officer died of natural causes, as determined the coroner, and several others later took their own lives(which is tragic). But there were none killed, so to allude to such a thing more than a year later is inexcusable.

All in all, this was a very interesting book. Know the bias going on, beware of noted factual inaccuracies, and enjoy it for the wealth of info in it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Reads OK, bot not a "Woodward" scale book

I appreciate the number of interviews the writers did, it gives a lot of background. But this is all politicians and the people that work with them. The views of the voters still remain a mystery to me.

The timing is odd. Perhaps the writers do not think Biden will not achieve anything more in the two years that are ahead, but all you get is a view of a leader who "couldn't."

Neither Biden or Harris comes through as a long term solution for Democrats.

Republicans are a mess. I don't see whole lot coming through for the next few years. Romney is in there, but he is an "also ran." McConnel struggles to make some effect, but he is no king maker. He is more at home holding back Democrats when he has the Senate. Poor guy, very little to take credit for with his enormous effort.

If you are not American, none of this book will be of much interest to you. The Trump presented is a cartoon character. For the rest of us, keeping track of the names is a struggle. If you watch MSNBC like I do, even then only about half the names are familiar.

3.0 out of 5 stars Extra! Extra! Having Read All About It!

The authors of this book are well respected political reporters for The NY Times. They have certainly done their homework in terms of covering the political landscape of 2020-2021 including pre-election, election and post-election events. Their resources include interviews on and off the record, memos, e-mails, videos and tapes. This reviewer happens to share their bias: Trump is a liar and a novice when it comes to understanding good governance. Although there was a kernel of new information about Trump shenanigans, unless a reader was comatose or living on Mars for this time period, wait for the January 6th Committee's final report for the full scoop.

I had high expectations for this book based on other reviews, but honestly, by now I've heard just about everything that is revealed in this book. The book puts together a narrative so those who haven't paid much attention to the news in the last two years might be interested. There was a lot that is not set forth in this book and it raised more questions than it answered for me.

The book deserves 5 stars for storytelling, but 1 star for honesty.

Imagine describing Tim Scott as the sole black Republican in the Senate, but not describing Corey Booker as the sole black Democrat one sentence prior.

PS - Politicians don't "lead" voters by committing political suicide playing useful idiots for the opposition party, ala Liz Cheney. (Loser.)

If you are looking for insight on our dysfunctional government this is the book for you. Takes you through the inner workings of the legislative branch and how decisions and legislation is really accomplished. Honestly there were no real surprises. Our two party system is doomed to fail and that failing is happening as we speak.

It was a narrative or simply a history of the last months of Trump and the first months of Biden’s presidency. I’m not saying it was bad there just wasn’t anything new exposed. Maybe I watch too many news programs. As a history it was great.
