I've been using this litter for a few months now. The pros are that it's virtually dust free and the price is right.
Cons are:
- tracking is terrible, my cats track it all over the house including the furniture. I'm always having to sweep up large amounts of litter around the box and litter mats are overwhelmed by the amount of tracked litter, which goes to waste. Another problem is that my longer haired cat ends up with gluey gobs of wet litter stuck to his feet, those end up on my furniture as well.
- odor control is negligible. When one of my cats poops, the stench is overpowering and fills my apartment. I notice they now often leave their poop lying on top of the litter without trying to bury it. I never had this problem with other brands of litter. I'm guessing they don't like digging in the larger granules of this litter. So when I smell that eye watering reek, I go for the air freshener and my long handled litter scoop to bury the poop.
- packaging is a horror. This litter comes in a very thick outer box, which is mummified in glue. To open it I have to chisel a flap on the box using a wrecking bar and a hammer. It takes at least 10 minutes, like chiseling a block of marble. Then I have to throw my back out rolling the box on its side so I can dump the heavy bag out. They should just package it in a reusable/recyclable bucket like other litter manufacturers.
- Clumping is not all it's cracked up to be, especially for a litter robot. The clumps have a gummy, wet consistency and they stick to the sides of the box like glue. This is a problem for the litter robot because it has a rotating drum that sifts the litter and dumps the clumps into a drawer. The clumps stick to the inside of the box/drum until they get huge and heavy, which wears out the motor of the robot and the rubber liner on the bottom, every time it rotates. Plus the clump is so big that the cats can't avoid stepping on it and getting gobs of litter stuck to their feet. The sludge from the clumps coats the inside of the litter drum. Then when they finally drop off, one huge clump trips the sensor in the drawer, it "thinks" it's full, then the robot stops operating and the box gets overfilled with waste and stinks. This often happens at night so it doesn't get fixed until the next day. I have to shake down the drawer several times per day due to the false alarms caused by oversized clumps.
After a few months of this (and another morning of finding a stinking, stalled litter box with a drawer containing three clumps) I've grown tired of dealing with this litter. I've read good things about crystal litter for litter robots, so I'm giving that a try.
